Geography of Hillsboro Inlet

Hillsboro Inlet is a passage between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway, located halfway between Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton. The inlet marks the northern boundary of the Florida Reef — an underwater coral formation that stretches along the southeastern coast of the state. The entrance to the inlet provides access to the Atlantic Ocean with a depth of about 7 feet (2.1 meters) and is located near Intracoastal Waterway Mile Marker 1054.

The inlet was named by surveyor William de Brahm in the early 1870s. Since then, this location has become an important navigation point for vessels traveling along the coast of Florida.

Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse: History and Description

The main landmark visible on the camera is the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse. It is one of the tallest lighthouses on the East Coast of the United States, standing at 136 feet (about 41.5 meters). The lighthouse is an iron skeletal tower and uses an original Fresnel lens that is still in operation.

The lighthouse is located at: 907 Hillsboro Mile, Hillsboro Beach, FL 33062. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Since 1997, the lighthouse has been managed by the Hillsboro Lighthouse Preservation Society (HLPS).

How to Get to the Pier

Access to the lighthouse and pier is possible via boat tours departing from Pompano Beach. The city opened Hillsboro Inlet Park in 2005 with views of the inlet and lighthouse. The park was closed for renovation to add a playground.

For those traveling through Florida by car, Pompano Beach is a 35-minute drive north of Fort Lauderdale. You can get there via I-95 or A1A, which runs along the Atlantic Ocean coast.

Yacht Clubs and Marina in the Inlet

On the southern shore of Hillsboro Inlet, on both sides of the bridge, there are yacht landings with a depth of 5 feet (about 1.5 meters). The marina offers: dockage, electricity, gasoline, diesel fuel, water, ice, marine supplies, a 10-ton mobile lift, as well as hull, engine, and electronics repair.
