Republic Square in Plzeň — webcam online
Republic Square: the heart of Plzeň
The online camera broadcasts the main square of this Czech city — Republic Square. It was here that the construction of Plzeň began in the 13th century, and today it remains a magnet for tourists. The main square was laid out in a rectangular shape, and it was from here that the city's construction began. The historic center has been protected as an urban monument reserve since 1989. The cobblestone pavement, now traversed by tram tracks, is visible in the foreground.
St. Bartholomew's Cathedral: the tallest church in the Czech Republic
The Gothic cathedral dominates the background — the main landmark of Plzeň. Construction of the cathedral began simultaneously with the founding of the city by King Wenceslaus II in 1295. The height of its tower is impressive: 102.26 m — the tallest tower in the Czech Republic. In 1322, the cathedral came under the administration of the Teutonic Order, which lasted for over two centuries, until 1546. The cemetery surrounding the church was demolished in 1784 by imperial decree.
Architectural ensemble: the Town Hall and the Plague Column
The webcam also captures other important landmarks. The City Hall was built in the Renaissance era to a design by an Italian architect and decorated with sgraffito featuring images of Czech kings. In the center of the square, a monument on a black pedestal is visible — this is the Plague Column. The Plague Column in the square is crowned with a replica of the Plzeň Madonna sculpture from the cathedral. Gilded fountains in a modern style were installed here in 2010.
Life of the square: from trams to festivals
Plzeň on the camera is always in motion. Cars, taxis, and city buses move across the square. In winter, the cobblestones are covered with snow, and before Christmas, a traditional market unfolds here. At night, the cathedral's illumination switches on, and the square looks completely different. In real time, you can observe how the city's rhythm changes.
