Historical Heritage: The Hotel That Survived Fire
West Baden Springs Hotel is one of the most unusual resorts in the American Midwest, located in scenic Orange County, Indiana. The first building on this site appeared in 1852, but by 1901 it had burned to the ground. Owner Lee Wiley Sinclair decided not to restore the old hotel but to create something unique. The new hotel with its grand dome opened on September 15, 1902. After 75 years of closure and a major renovation in 2007, the resort once again opened its doors to guests. Today the hotel has 243 rooms, including 40 rooms with balconies overlooking the atrium.
Record-Breaking Dome: Architecture and Engineering
The hotel's main attraction is the atrium dome with a 200-foot (61 m) diameter. Until 1955, it remained the largest free-spanning dome in the world. Bridge engineer Oliver Wesket designed a structure that originally rested on rollers to compensate for thermal expansion. Architect Harrison Albright from West Virginia brought this project to life, creating a space that contemporaries called the "Eighth Wonder of the World."
