Two names on the city map

The intersection of Dzerzhinsky and Sportivnaya streets is one of those crossroads through which you can trace how Nizhnevartovsk has changed over the decades. But on September 7, 1977, the city council's executive committee assigned Street No. 9 the name of Felix Dzerzhinsky at the request of the city police department staff. Felix Edmundovich — a Soviet statesman of Polish origin, head of the Cheka, whose name was given to thousands of streets across the country during Soviet times. In Nizhnevartovsk, this name took root and has existed for almost half a century.

Sportivnaya Street got its name not for ideological reasons, but for quite practical ones — thanks to the sports facilities located on it. Nizhnevartovsk has historically been one of the leaders in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug in the development of mass sports: the city has 87 gyms, 21 swimming pools, an indoor hockey rink, three shooting ranges, the Central Stadium, and a ski base. The Olympic Reserve Sports School and the volleyball club Ugra-Samotlor, founded in 1987, made this part of the street a true sports cluster of the city.

The intersection that couldn't find its destiny

The intersection of Dzerzhinsky and Sportivnaya remained a problem area for a long time. Nearby is the building of the Faculty of Physical Culture and Sports of the Nizhnevartovsk State University — further evidence that this part of the city has historically been associated with sports and physical culture.

At the Central Stadium, which is also within walking distance of the intersection, a monument has been installed — "Stars of Nizhnevartovsk Sports" — unveiled for the city's 30th anniversary in 2002. The metal stars bear the names of people who became the pride of Russian sports and began their journey right here in Nizhnevartovsk.

Monuments and urban environment

On Dzerzhinsky Street stands the building of the Nizhnevartovsk Police Department, and in front of it is a monument to F.E. Dzerzhinsky — a logical culmination of a street named after this man. The monument to Felix Dzerzhinsky in Nizhnevartovsk is one of the few surviving monuments in Russia to the founder of the Cheka.
