Over two centuries, the harbor has evolved from a small trading port into a world-class modern cruise terminal. Today, it is not just a transportation hub but a full-fledged tourist cluster with restaurants, shops, and entertainment within walking distance of the piers.

Port Terminals: Where the Liners Dock

The port has three cruise terminals — No. 10, 25, and 28. In 2023, $53 million was invested in the modernization of Terminal 25, and a new terminal worth $156 million is scheduled to open in 2025. Terminal 25 primarily serves Carnival cruise liners, including the new Carnival Jubilee, while Terminal 28 accommodates ships from Carnival, Disney, and Norwegian. In 2024, the port set a record by serving over 3 million cruise passengers and nearly 400 voyages. Six major cruise lines are based here: Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Disney, Princess, and MSC. Galveston has become the departure point for cruises to the Caribbean, Mexico, and the Bahamas. Thanks to this, the city is among the top 5 most affordable cruise ports in the US and plans to become the third-largest cruise port in the country by 2025.

Shipping Channel and Harbor

The Galveston shipping channel is an engineering structure that provides access for large vessels to the terminals. Its authorized minimum depth is 45 feet (14 m), and its width at the narrowest point is 1,200 feet (370 m). The channel operates year-round, 24/7, ensuring uninterrupted access to the Gulf of Mexico. It is through this channel that giant cruise liners maneuver to the piers, and all of this can be observed via the webcam in real time.

How to Get to the Cruise Terminals

The cruise terminals are located in the eastern part of Galveston Island, in the Harborside Drive area. From Houston, you can drive here via I-45 in about an hour. Cruise passengers have access to parking near the terminals, as well as transfers from hotels and airports. Near the terminals is historic downtown Galveston with its famous Seawall Boulevard, where restaurants, shops, and attractions are concentrated.
