Town of Lipova in Romania — online webcam
Lipova — a historic crossroads of Banat
The town of Lipova is located in western Romania, in Arad County, in the historical region of Banat, at a distance of 34 km (21 miles) from the city of Arad. This is a place with a rich past where trade routes intertwined. Lipova was first mentioned in documents in 1221 as a settlement on the Mureș River and a customs post in the salt trade. Historically, Lipova developed at a crossing over the Mureș, gaining importance due to the intersection of trade routes.
From a medieval mint to the present day
In the 14th century, Lipova was the largest town in the region, where Charles I of Hungary built a church and founded a mint. The town's population has changed over the centuries. While in 1992 the population of Lipova was 12,693, by 2026 estimates it stands at 10,570, reflecting the general trend of population decline in small Romanian towns.
Sanctuaries and fortifications: what to see in the area
The surroundings of Lipova are rich in historical monuments. 2 km northeast of the town lies the Șoimoș Fortress, built at the end of the 13th century on the "Cioaca Tăutului" hill on the right bank of the Mureș River. The first documented mention of the fortress dates back to 1278, and around 1440–1446 it was reconstructed by John Hunyadi. Another important landmark is the Maria Radna Monastery and Basilica — an active Franciscan monastery built in 1723. In 1992, Pope John Paul II granted the church the status of a "minor basilica". It is one of the most visited Catholic shrines in western Romania. The period of Ottoman occupation also left its mark — the Turkish Bath (Turkish Bazaar) was built between 1637 and 1672.
Geographical location and climate
Lipova is known by several historical names: Romanian Lipova, Hungarian Lippa, German Lippa, Serbian Липова, Turkish Lipva. The town lies in the Mureș River valley, surrounded by forested hills. This location creates a special microclimate, and the surrounding landscapes are typical of Banat — green slopes, neat urban quarters, and picturesque views of the river.
