Legends and History of Celtic Heritage
The name of these places has roots stretching back to antiquity. the massif was named after the Celtic tribe Vertamocorii, who inhabited these lands during the Roman conquest of Gaul. This tribe chose the rocky plateaus as a refuge from invaders, and since then the terrain has preserved its rugged character.
Natural Bastion above Grenoble
The Vercors is a natural fortress of limestone plateaus. the eastern cliffs tower over Grenoble, rising above the valleys of the Drôme and Isère rivers to the east of the Rhône Valley. The highest point of this mighty bastion is Grand Veymont, reaching 2341 m above sea level. The Vercors Regional Nature Park was established in 1970 and covers 206,208 hectares — making it the largest regional park in France.
Flora and Fauna of the Limestone Plateaus
The biodiversity of the massif is astonishing. Across 85 communes, approximately 53,000 people live surrounded by 550 species of plants, 87 species of moss, 94 species of lichen, and 111 species of algae. The forests and meadows are home to 135 species of nesting birds, 65 species of mammals, and 17 species of reptiles and amphibians, including chamois, mouflon, red deer, wild boar, and Alpine ibex.
Resistance Within the Stone Walls
During World War II, the isolated terrain became a base for French partisans. Vassieux-en-Vercors became a center of the Resistance; in April 1944, the first punitive expedition by the French militia was sent there, and in the summer of 1944, the Germans launched a large-scale operation using gliders. Today, the memory of those events is preserved at the Museum of the Resistance and the memorial cemetery in Vassieux-en-Vercors, as well as the Vercors Resistance Memorial at Col de la Chau and the Tribunal du Feu in La Chapelle-en-Vercors.
Winter Sports and Alpine Traditions
Autrans, where the online camera is installed, is itself a well-known ski resort. Autrans is renowned for its cross-country skiing areas and biathlon. Nearby are the resorts of Villard-de-Lans, the largest for downhill skiing, and Lans-en-Vercors. The local landscapes are perfect for outdoor activities and exploring natural beauty.
Karst Caves and Geological Wonders
The massif is composed of limestone and contains numerous karst caves. the terrain is shaped by limestone pavements, scree slopes, and karst networks. One of the most famous underground cavities is the Grotte de la Bergerie. its depth is 1,200 meters, and for a long time it was considered the deepest in the world; its walls consist of porous limestone prone to erosion during floods. Also worth mentioning is the Scialet de les Nuits.

Beyond the field begins a dense mixed forest covering the hill slopes — coniferous trees predominate with interspersed deciduous trees. In the background rise rocky mountain peaks with pronounced relief, some slopes covered with forest. The sky is often overcast with breaks in the clouds, adding drama to the landscape. This webcam allows you to appreciate the scale and beauty of the pre-Alpine ridges without leaving home.
