Where is Galskoye Reservoir Located

Galskoye Reservoir is located in the eastern part of Abkhazia, within the Tkvarcheli District, near the border with Georgia. This is an artificial reservoir created in a mountain valley, surrounded by wooded hills and spurs of the Greater Caucasus Range. The nearest major settlement is the town of Tkvarcheli, founded in 1942. The distance from the republic's capital to the reservoir is 77 km by road.

The resort town of Gali is closest to the reservoir — it can be reached on foot by walking about 6 km along Bagrat III Street, or by hitchhiking. At the entrance to Gali from the traffic police post, you need to turn left, after which a concrete road begins leading directly to the reservoir.

History of Creation: Inguri Hydroelectric Power Station and the Reservoir

Galskoye Reservoir is not a natural lake — it was formed during a period of large-scale hydraulic engineering construction. The massive construction project started in 1961 and was inextricably linked to the construction of the Inguri Hydroelectric Power Station — the largest hydroelectric plant in the Caucasus. The station itself was launched in 1978.

The uniqueness of the Inguri HPP lies in its design: water from the Inguri River enters through underground tunnels in the mountains and is discharged into Galskoye Reservoir. The station's underground machine hall is located in Abkhazia, 20 km from the dam. This system allows the use of the elevation difference between the upper and lower tailrace to generate electricity.

Mountain Ranges and Forests Around the Reservoir

Galskoye Reservoir is surrounded by impressive mountain landscapes. The embankment offers a view of wooded hills and a mountain range stretching along the horizon. On the southern slope of the Greater Caucasus Range lies the Pskhu-Gumista Strict Nature Reserve — a protected natural area covering 40,018 hectares.

The reserve is an array of fir and beech forests, where oaks, lindens, maples, chestnuts, and rhododendrons also grow. The total number of plant species here is 470 species, some of which have existed since ancient times predating the glacial period. The shores of the reservoir retain their wild character — there is no developed tourist infrastructure here, creating a sense of untouched nature.

The climate in the area of Galskoye Reservoir is moderately continental with mountain features. The average annual temperature is around +9°C. Summers here are moderately hot, and winters are warm compared to lowland areas. Snow cover from November to May lies on the peaks of the surrounding mountains, while at the reservoir level winters are significantly milder.

Thanks to this climate, the vegetation around the reservoir remains green for most of the year. In spring and autumn, the mountain slopes are especially picturesque — beech and fir forests are painted in various shades.

How to Get to Galskoye Reservoir from Gali

The town of Gali is the closest resort settlement to the reservoir. There are several ways to get to the reservoir from Gali:

On foot — about 6 km along Bagrat III Street. The road is concrete with elevation changes, so the walk will take about an hour and a half. By hitchhiking — local cars regularly travel along the road to the reservoir and can give tourists a ride.

By car — from the traffic police post at the entrance to Gali, you need to turn left, after which a concrete road begins leading directly to the reservoir. It should be noted that the road is mountainous and requires careful driving.

The Reservoir in Winter and Summer: What Changes

Galskoye Reservoir looks different depending on the season. In summer, the water surface is calm, reflecting the blue sky and green slopes. The shores are covered with dense vegetation, and branches and leaves carried by mountain streams may float on the water.

In winter, the landscape changes: the peaks of the surrounding mountains are covered with snow, and the water surface takes on darker, colder shades. The forests on the slopes stand bare (except for coniferous species), revealing the structure of the mountain relief. On overcast days, the reservoir looks particularly atmospheric — the gray sky merges with the water on the horizon.
