Geographic Location and Elevation

Floresta is a tiny mountain town in the province of Messina in northeastern Sicily. It sits at an elevation of 1,275 meters above sea level, making it the highest municipality on the entire island. Between the Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas, in the Nebrodi Mountains, this settlement covers an area of 31 km² with a population of approximately 637 people as of 2008. History of the Town

The first reliable records of Floresta date back to the 14th century, although these lands were inhabited even earlier. The town's name comes from the Italian "foresta" — meaning forest. In ancient times, tall trees grew here, from which the Romans obtained timber for building military and transport ships. It is believed that logging was carried out by prisoners of war and slaves. Today, only scattered groves remain from those ancient forests, while the main vegetation consists of beech and pine groves.

How to Get There

Floresta is located approximately 140 kilometers east of Palermo and about 60 kilometers southwest of Messina. From Messina, the route is 114 km and takes about 2 hours via the A20 motorway to Brolo, then along SS116. From Catania Airport — 90 km, roughly 1.5 hours via SS284 to Randazzo. Public transport is limited to occasional AST buses from Patti or Randazzo, so renting a car is recommended for a comfortable journey.

Thanks to its elevation of 1,275 meters, Floresta's climate differs from the typical Mediterranean one. Winters are cold with frequent snowfall, especially in January and February. Summers are mild and dry, but nights remain cool. The temperature difference between day and night can reach 10–15 degrees. Precipitation is evenly distributed throughout the year, peaking in the winter months. These conditions make the town attractive for those who want to see snowy Sicily — a rare phenomenon for the island.
