Cingoli: the balcony of the Marche region

Roman roots and papal heritage
The history of these places goes deep into antiquity. The town was founded as the Roman Cingulum in 63 BC by Julius Caesar's legate Titus Labienus on the site of an earlier Picenum settlement. But Cingoli is known not only for its ancient ruins. This is a small town with a great spiritual heritage, for it was here in 1761 that the future pontiff was born. Cingoli is the birthplace of Pius VIII. A reminder of the papal era is the Palazzo Castiglioni (17th century) — the former residence of Pius VIII, which today serves as the bishop's residence.
Masterpieces by Lorenzo Lotto and architecture
Art lovers will find special pleasure in Cingoli. The local municipal art gallery houses Lorenzo Lotto's masterpiece "Madonna of the Rosary" (1539), originally painted for the church of San Domenico. The church of San Domenico (14th century) itself contains another version of this famous painting — "Madonna of the Rosary with Saints." And in the historic center, in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, is the State Archaeological Museum, whose exhibition tells of the rich past of these territories.

The town is famous for its gastronomic traditions and is part of the wine region that produces the famous white wine. Despite the fact that Cingoli's population is about 9,872 people, and the area of the commune reaches 147 km², the town maintains the warm atmosphere of a true Italian commune.

The spiritual life of Cingoli is inseparably linked to its patrons. The town venerates Saints Sperandia and Exuperanzio. In the forest on the slopes of the mountain lies an amazing place — the Hermitage of Santa Sperandia. It contains caves associated with the life of Saint Sperandia, a 13th-century Benedictine nun, and is a place of pilgrimage and seclusion, surrounded by natural beauty.
