Praia dos Pescadores in Ericeira — Online Webcam
Praia dos Pescadores in the Heart of Ericeira
On the west coast of Portugal, 40 kilometers north of Lisbon, lies Ericeira — an ancient fishing village turned world surfing capital. Right here, in the city center, is Praia dos Pescadores — Fishermen's Beach, one of the most atmospheric stretches of the Atlantic coast. The live webcam broadcasts a direct feed from this beach, allowing you to witness the life of a Portuguese port in real time.
Ericeira is a place where fishing traditions intertwine with modern surf culture. The town has preserved its historic character: white houses with tiled roofs, narrow streets, and a harbor where fishing boats still dock. The webcam at Fishermen's Beach captures exactly this authentic atmosphere — not a tourist resort, but a living port city.
Why the Beach Is Called Fishermen's
The name Praia dos Pescadores is directly linked to the historic fishing port Porto de Pesca, located right by the beach. To this day, local fishermen occupy the coastal zone before and after their catch, creating that authentic fishing harbor atmosphere you can observe on the webcam. The coastal strip has traditionally been used for mending nets, preparing gear, and landing fish — activities that have continued without interruption for several centuries.
Interestingly, this beach is connected to one of the most dramatic events in Portuguese history. Following the revolution of October 5, 1910, the last King of Portugal, Manuel II, set sail from Ericeira's harbor into exile. He first headed to Gibraltar, then to Great Britain. A commemorative azulejo plaque (traditional Portuguese tiles) has been installed on the beach to mark this historic event.
Chapel of Our Lady of the Good Journey
On the webcam, in the right part of the frame, you can see a historic building with a distinctive dome — this is the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Good Journey. It is also known as Capela de Santo António da Boa Viagem. The chapel is dedicated to the patron saint of sailors and travelers, which is especially symbolic for a fishing town.
The chapel was built by local fishermen in the early 18th century as a spiritual refuge for those heading out to sea. Inside, the walls are covered with polychrome tiles — traditional Portuguese azulejos. The number of parishioners and sailors visiting this chapel has not diminished to this day: fishermen still ask for a blessing before heading out into the Atlantic.
The Fishing Harbor and Porto de Pesca
The fishing harbor Porto de Pesca is protected by a large breakwater that absorbs the impact of northern Atlantic waves. This engineering structure not only protects the beach and coastal infrastructure but also creates comfortable conditions for surfers, allowing them to enter the water when wave conditions are suitable.
In the 19th century, Ericeira's port ranked fourth in economic importance in Portugal after Lisbon, Porto, and Setúbal. The fishing industry was the foundation of the city's prosperity, and the port continued to expand until the mid-20th century. Today, the harbor combines traditional fishing with tourist yachting — modern yachts and sailboats dock alongside fishing boats.
Ericeira — Europe's First Surfing Reserve
On October 14, 2011, Ericeira was proclaimed a World Surfing Reserve. It was the first such reserve in Europe and the second in the world after Malibu in California. The organization Save The Waves Coalition recognized the uniqueness of the local wave conditions and the density of surf spots along a relatively short stretch of coastline.
The World Surfing Reserve status protects a 4-kilometer stretch of coastline between Pedra Branca and São Lourenço, including Praia dos Pescadores. Legendary surf spots are located on this stretch: Ribeira d'Ilhas, Coxos, Pedra Branca, and others. Every year Ericeira hosts stages of world surfing competitions, and the webcam at Fishermen's Beach allows you to assess wave conditions in real time.
What You Can See on the Webcam
The online camera from Fishermen's Beach broadcasts a panorama of the fishing harbor and urban coastline of Ericeira. In the foreground — the sandy beach with vacationers, umbrellas, and sun loungers. Along the shore, equipment and trucks used by fishermen for boat maintenance are parked.
On the left, you can see a stone pier with a port crane and construction structures — this is the working zone of Porto de Pesca. Nearby is a historic building with arched windows. Dozens of boats rock at anchor in the water: fishing boats, sailboats, and yachts. In the right part of the frame, a large historic sailing ship and a modern building with a dome are visible — the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem.
In the background, across the water surface, opens a view of Ericeira's cityscape: white houses with terraces descending toward the coast. The sky is often shrouded in characteristic Atlantic haze, which gives the landscape a special mood. The webcam operates around the clock, allowing you to observe the life of the port at any time of day — from morning fishing tides to evening sunsets over the Atlantic.
