Furadouro Beach is located in the central part of Portugal's western coast, on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, in the parish of Ovar, Aveiro district, just 4 km from the center of Ovar. This urban beach has been awarded the Blue Flag, including for 2026, confirming the high quality of water and infrastructure.

Furadouro occupies an intermediate position between the Ria de Aveiro lagoon to the north and the beaches of Torrão do Lameiro and São Jacinto to the south. This location makes it a convenient base for exploring the entire coastline between Porto and Aveiro. A cycle path connects Ovar with Furadouro Beach, making it accessible for cyclists and pedestrians.

History of Furadouro: from fishing village to resort

The name "Furadouro" comes from the Portuguese verb "furar" — to make a hole, to pierce, derived from the Latin *forare*, with the suffix "-douro" indicating the place where the action is performed. The name is likely associated with an outlet of underground water or a place where a channel was dug.

The oldest known record of fishing activities at Furadouro dates back to 1600. In 1776, the Frenchman Jean Pierre Migoule, together with Catalans, established the first sardine preservation process on the beach using the salting method, which was kept secret for some time.

By 1906, four fishing companies operated on the Furadouro coast: S. Pedro (or do Guincho), S. Luís (or Camona), Senhora do Socorro (or do Massaroca), and "Boa Esperança" (Pinto Palavra & C.ª L.ª). Fishing remained the backbone of the local economy for centuries.

Climate and weather on the coast

Furadouro's climate is warm and temperate according to the Köppen-Geiger classification. The beach is characterized by a mild climate with air temperatures of 15–20°C and a sea breeze bringing pleasant coolness. The open position on the western coast makes Furadouro a windy place.

August is the warmest month with an average temperature of 26°C (79°F), January is the coldest with an average of 15°C (59°F). The winter season receives more rainfall than the summer. These conditions make the beach attractive for recreation in the summer months and for walks in the off-season.

Traditions and festivals

Furadouro Beach still practices Xávega — small-scale fishing using a casting net with a long handle with floats and a conical net bag. This traditional fishing method is preserved by local fishermen as part of the cultural heritage.

Every year, Festas do Mar — Sea Festivals are held on the coast with a religious procession Romaria, an open-air mass led by the auxiliary bishop of Porto, and a musical program. During the bathing season (August), the circus festival Circool (Circo do Furadouro) takes place, organized by the Union of Parishes of Ovar.

In 2025, the Festival Fura — a three-day music festival is scheduled for August 15–17 in the fishing village of Furadouro. These events attract tourists and locals, creating a special atmosphere on the coast.

Recreation and entertainment in Furadouro

Furadouro Beach is a popular spot for surfing in the appropriate season and fishing in another season. The open position on the Atlantic Ocean provides consistent waves that attract surfers from across northern Portugal. The sandy shore and stone promenade create diverse conditions for recreation.

The cycle path connecting Ovar with Furadouro Beach makes it accessible for active recreation. The Blue Flag guarantees clean water and sand, the presence of lifeguard stations, and the necessary infrastructure for safe recreation. The stone promenade with lampposts creates a special atmosphere for evening walks.
