Pakkahuone Shore in Uusikaupunki — Live Webcam
Pakkahuone Shore — a lively waterfront on the Gulf of Bothnia
Pakkahuone Shore is one of the busiest coastal areas in Uusikaupunki, a city in southwestern Finland. Here, urban infrastructure, a yacht marina, and the calm waters of the Gulf of Bothnia come together. The live webcam from Pakkahuone Shore offers a panoramic view of the waterfront, moored yachts and motorboats, and in the distance — a dense coniferous forest framing the city. This is a place where the city's maritime history intertwines with the everyday life of locals and visitors.
Uusikaupunki — a city with a maritime past
Uusikaupunki is one of the oldest cities in Finland, founded in 1617 by Swedish King Gustav II. The city is located on the shores of the Gulf of Bothnia in the Vakka-Suomi sub-region. Today, about 14,525 people live here, and the city retains the charm of an old maritime settlement.
In the 19th century, the local Uusikaupunki fleet was the second largest in Finland. The city's seafaring traditions are still felt today — in the architecture of old warehouses, in the numerous yachts in the harbor, and in the special atmosphere of coastal life. The city is also known as the home of the Valmet Automotive plant, and its port plays a key role in Finnish trade.
Gulf of Bothnia — the northern part of the Baltic Sea
Pakkahuone Shore faces the Gulf of Bothnia — the northernmost part of the Baltic Sea, located between Sweden and Finland. The gulf has an elongated shape, with a length of 668 km, a maximum width of 240 km, and an average depth of 60 m. Near the shores of Uusikaupunki, the gulf's waters are calm, making this place attractive for yachting and waterfront recreation.
The eastern shore of the Gulf of Bothnia, where Uusikaupunki is located, features a low-lying landscape and sandy beaches. It is here that the sandy Pakkahuone Bay was formed — a sheltered body of water protected from strong waves, ideal for mooring small vessels and strolling along the waterfront.
Beaches of Uusikaupunki — 11 public recreation areas
The city of Uusikaupunki maintains 11 public beaches, located both on the seacoast and by inland lakes. Pakkahuone Shore stands out among them for its proximity to the city center, the guest harbor, and well-developed infrastructure. Unlike more secluded beaches such as Santioranta or Hiirunranta, Pakkahuone is a lively spot with cafes, restaurants, and terraces right by the water.
The sandy area at Pakkahuone Shore is well-maintained: there is a pedestrian path, streetlights, a landscape flowerbed with stones, and a wooden fence. Red anchor buoys lined up in the water mark the boundary of the swimming area and add a picturesque quality to the view.
Yacht Marina and Port of Uusikaupunki
The Port of Uusikaupunki is an important hub on the map of Finnish trade. In 2018, the port's total international cargo turnover was approximately 2.5 million tons, with about 60% being exports. This made Uusikaupunki the 10th largest export port in Finland. The port is Finland's main export port for automobiles thanks to the Valmet Automotive plant located in the city.
Adjacent to the commercial port is the Uusikaupunki guest marina, welcoming yachts and motorboats of travelers cruising the archipelago. From here, you can head to the Isokari lighthouse or the island fortress of Katanpää. The Pakkahuone marina visible on the camera is part of this guest harbor, where dozens of vessels of various sizes are moored.
Cultural Heritage and Promenade
Uusikaupunki offers visitors a four-kilometer cultural history promenade passing through old quarters with wooden architecture. The city has a museum in a historic manor, preserving the interior of the late 19th to early 20th century. Pakkahuone Shore is part of this cultural landscape: here, a modern waterfront sits alongside buildings that recall the city's maritime past.
The name "Pakkahuone" comes from the Swedish Pakkahuoneen — "packing room" or "warehouse." This refers to the historical purpose of this coastal zone, where storage facilities for goods arriving by sea were once located. Today, instead of warehouses, there are cafes and terraces, but the maritime atmosphere remains.
