Chavenay Airfield — Online Webcam Live Streaming 24/7
History of Chavenay Airfield: from 1932 to the present day
Chavenay-Villepreux Airfield is one of those corners of French aviation where history literally hangs in the air. This place began its life in 1932, when a runway for light aircraft appeared in the Versailles plain. Almost a century later, the airfield continues to live and operate, preserving the spirit of aviation's golden age.
World War II left its mark on the fate of this location. German troops used the airfield during the occupation, after which it returned to civilian use. Today, Chavenay is not a transit hub or cargo center, but a true home for aviation enthusiasts, restorers of vintage aircraft, and those who simply love watching planes take to the sky.
Where Chavenay Airfield is located on the map of France
Geographically, the airfield is located in the Yvelines department (78), Île-de-France region, 27 km west of central Paris. The territory covers 47 hectares in the Versailles plain, on the lands of the communes of Chavenay and Villepreux. It is close enough to the capital to be reachable by public transport, yet far enough away to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
The flat terrain makes the airfield ideal for visual observation — which is why the Chavenay webcam provides such a good view of the airfield. The tree line visible on the horizon in the stream is the natural boundary of the territory, beyond which the residential area begins.
Aero clubs and life at the airfield
Chavenay is not just one aero club, but an entire aviation community. Several associations are based here, each contributing to the life of the location:
Aéroclub Jean Bertin — one of the oldest clubs at the airfield, trains light aircraft pilots.
Aéroclub Gaston Caudron — named after a pioneer of French aviation, upholds the traditions of flying excellence.
Aéroclub A.R.C. — operating since 1969, specializes in training and practice flights.
Aeroclub Dassault Ile de France (ACDIF) — the webcam you see in the stream is installed right in front of this club. The club is connected to the legacy of France's aviation industry.
The airfield also houses a collection of historic aircraft — true "dinosaurs" of mid-20th century aviation that are maintained in flying condition. These are not museum exhibits behind a fence, but machines that sometimes take to the air.
What aircraft can be seen at the airfield
The Chavenay airfield webcam primarily shows the light aircraft parking area. In the foreground, a single-engine aircraft in blue-white-red livery is usually visible — the colors of the French flag, which is characteristic of many local aircraft. The registration number on the fuselage allows identification of the specific machine.
In the middle of the frame is the grass runway, where light aircraft are also parked. Chavenay is not designed for heavy aviation: mainly private and sport aircraft are based here, as well as training planes of the aero clubs.
The collection of historic aircraft is a separate attraction. Restorers keep mid-century specimens in flying condition, and sometimes they can be seen on the parking area before being rolled out to the runway.
How to get to Chavenay Airfield from Paris
For those who want to see the airfield not only on the webcam but also in person, there are several options. The nearest stations are Chavenay and Villepreux - Les Clayes on the Transilien line. From there, the airfield is within walking distance or a few minutes by bus.
By car, the journey from central Paris takes about 40-50 minutes depending on traffic. Exact address: 13 Aérodrome de Chavenay, 78450 Chavenay. Parking on the airfield premises is available for visitors.
Heritage Days and aviation exhibitions
One of the best reasons to visit Chavenay is Heritage Days (Journées du Patrimoine), when the airfield opens its doors to the general public. On these days, aircraft exhibitions are held, flight simulators operate, and you can get a close look at legendary machines that are usually only visible on the parking apron.
If you watch the webcam on days when such events take place, you can notice increased activity on the stream: more people, open hangars, aircraft being rolled out onto open areas.
What you can see on the camera
The Chavenay airfield webcam is installed in front of the ACDIF aero club building and broadcasts a view of the paved parking area for light aircraft. In the right part of the frame, a single-engine aircraft with a registration number, painted in blue-white-red colors, is usually visible in the foreground. The central part shows the grass runway with parked light aircraft. On the horizon is a line of trees marking the boundary of the airfield. On the left, part of a hangar building with a shaded side is visible. The camera operates in real time, allowing you to observe the life of Chavenay airfield at any time of day.
