Gekås Ullared — era at the Entrance to Sweden's Largest Mega Store
In the small Swedish village of Ullared, hidden among the forests of the province of Halland, lies a store that turned the concept of retail on its head. Gekås Ullared is not just a shopping destination, but a full-fledged tourist attraction, drawing millions of shoppers from across Scandinavia every year. If you want to see this place in real time, the live web camera at the store entrance will show you an endless stream of people, cars, and shopping carts — a living chronicle of Swedish shopping madness.
From a Village Shop to a Retail Empire
It all began in 1963, when Göran Karlsson founded a small shop called Ge-kås Manufaktur right in the village of Ullared. No one could have imagined at the time that this modest store would grow into the largest retail facility in Sweden. Today, the sales area exceeds 30,000 square meters — that's over 320,000 square feet of products, price tags, and endless checkout lines.
The warehouse infrastructure is equally impressive: 50,000 m² of warehouse space is located just a few hundred meters from the main building. During peak season, around 2,000 employees work here to keep this giant consumer goods machine running smoothly.
Numbers That Blow Your Mind
Gekås statistics read like a report from a major corporation, not a store in a village with a population of about 1,000. In 2024, 4 million visitors were recorded, along with record sales of 6.4 billion Swedish kronor. But the absolute single-day revenue record was set on November 8, 2024 — 56 million kronor in a single shift.
For comparison: back in 2010, the turnover was 4.2 billion Swedish kronor, and the previous daily attendance record was 26,200 people on July 23, 2008. The average shopper travels 150 kilometers to reach Ullared, and the average receipt amounts to 3,300 Swedish kronor.
Who Travels to Ullared and Why
The profile of a typical Gekås shopper has been well studied by marketers. 64% of visitors are women, 36% are men. The average guest spends nearly 5 hours in the store — this is no quick errand, but a full day of shopping with lunch at one of the eight restaurants inside.
Prices here are indeed significantly lower than in regular Swedish stores — sometimes by half. This is the main magic of Gekås: a huge assortment plus deep discounts. Residents of Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö plan entire weekends around a trip to Ullared, turning shopping into a family adventure.
Mega-Store Logistics
To accommodate this flood of bargain hunters, the infrastructure must be up to the task. The Gekås parking lot has 4,000 free spaces, and even that is not always enough on peak days. For electric vehicle owners, there are 149 charging stations — Sweden cares about the ecology even during a consumer boom.
The parking lot is constantly expanding: 400 new spaces were recently added. The logistics system is fine-tuned to the smallest detail — goods from the 50,000 m² warehouses are delivered to the sales floor so quickly that shoppers don't even notice the restocking process.
Ullared: A Village That Lives Off Shopping
Ullared itself is a tiny village in Falkenberg Municipality, Halland County, on the west coast of Sweden. Without Gekås, few people would have heard of it outside the region. But it is the store that made this name a household word for millions of Scandinavians. Today, Ullared is synonymous with cheap shopping, and Gekås itself is a tourist attraction that has been included in travel routes across Sweden.
Locals have long grown accustomed to the streams of cars on the E6/E20 highway leading to the village. On sale days, traffic jams stretch for kilometers, and hotels and campgrounds in the area are packed to the rafters — people come from Norway, Denmark, and even southern Sweden to catch the best deals.
What the Camera Shows
The live camera is installed at the store entrance — the so-called varuhusentré — and shows everything happening outside in real time. You will see the main entrance to Gekås Ullared, the flow of visitors who walk in with empty carts and return loaded up a few hours later. On peak days, real queues form at the doors — people rush to secure their spot in the aisles before the sales begin.
The broadcast is in HD quality, allowing you to see the details: the number of cars in the parking lot, the weather in Ullared, the mood of the crowd. It's a great way to assess how busy the store is before your trip, or simply to observe a unique phenomenon — the Swedish shopping frenzy — in real time. The camera is available on the official Gekås website and a number of third-party platforms, broadcasting the life of Scandinavia's most unusual store 24/7.
