History of Lazarevskoye — From Fortress to Resort

The settlement of Lazarevskoye is named after Admiral Mikhail Petrovich Lazarev, a legendary navigator who made three circumnavigations of the globe and participated in the conquest of Antarctica. In 1833, he was appointed commander-in-chief of the Black Sea Fleet, and a few years later his name was given to this stretch of coast.

In 1839, a naval landing force disembarked at the mouth of the Subashi and Shipauchi rivers and built a coastal fortress to protect the shoreline. The fort stood for fifteen years but was destroyed during the Crimean War in 1854, and the garrison was relocated to Novorossiysk. Settlers founded a new settlement and preserved the name Lazarevka. The modern history of the resort begins in 1869, when Russian families began arriving here. By 1891, the population exceeded 200 people.

An interesting picture was left by Countess Uvarova, who visited these places in 1886: she described a fertile lowland with the ruins of a fortress — embrasures, towers, walls, and the ruins of a church — and nearby, a village where the steamship "Grand Duke Michael" stopped for several minutes to pick up passengers. At the southern tower, on the site of the destroyed wall, there now stands a white cross on a beautiful stepped pedestal — this monument is visible from the sea.

February 10, 1961, the Lazarevsky District was abolished and incorporated into Sochi as an urban district. Since then, the settlement has become a popular resort, which in 2004 welcomed 220,000 vacationers in 102 health resorts.

Climate and Nature of the Subtropical Coast

Lazarevskoye is located in a unique climatic zone — these are the northernmost subtropics in the world. The Main Caucasian Range blocks the path of cold winds from the north, creating a mild, warm climate all year round.

The average annual air temperature for the period from 1991 to 2020 is +14.6°C. In summer, in July, the thermometer on average rises to +24.1°C, and in winter, in January, it drops only to +6.0°C. This makes the resort attractive for vacations in any season.

The subtropical flora is striking in its diversity: cypresses, thujas, palms, magnolias, and rhododendrons grow here. In the mountain forests, you can find tall fir trees, groves of dwarf birches, oaks, chestnuts, and yew. Evergreen shrubs — rhododendron and boxwood — create the feeling of a tropical paradise. The northern border of the subtropics runs near Chemitokvadzhe, where cypress growth is still possible.

In the waters of the Black Sea off the coast of Lazarevskoye, jellyfish inhabit the waters, and the shore is adorned with blooming magnolias and camellias. The mountain relief adds picturesqueness to the landscapes — from the embankment, there are views of the spurs of the Caucasus, covered with dense greenery.

Beaches and Coastline of Lazarevskoye

The coastline of Lazarevskoye stretches for tens of kilometers, and there are about 20 beaches located here. They are predominantly pebble — there are no sandy beaches in the settlement. Thanks to the rocky bottom, the water is amazingly clear on calm days, and the absence of breakwaters makes entering the sea comfortable.

Among the most popular beaches: Flamingo, Morskaya Zvezda (Sea Star), Dolphin, Centralnaya, Shtorm, Topol, Dikarya, Biryuza, Rybatzkoye. The pebble coastline in places reaches 40 meters in width and 300 meters in length. Wooden walkways made of slats lead right to the water — walking on them is comfortable even barefoot.

Morskaya Zvezda Beach and Svirsky Beach consist of small pebbles, with soft pebbles underfoot interspersed with yellow sand. The Centralnaya Beach, with its developed infrastructure, offers not only daytime entertainment but also evening events. On the pebble coast opposite the Biryuza health resort, you can sunbathe and swim in clean water in summer.

Attractions and Infrastructure of the Resort

The Lazarevskoye Embankment is the center of resort life, stretching along the Black Sea coast for 1 kilometer from the Park of the 30th Anniversary of Victory to Grenada Beach. Trade kiosks, cafes, restaurants, and entertainment for tourists are concentrated here.

In the very center of tourist life, there is a Ferris wheel offering a panoramic view of the settlement and the sea. Nearby are the Laza Hall and Chernomorsky Breeze hotels, and the Pavlovsky shopping center. The intersection of Armavirskaya and Batumskoye Highway is an important transport junction of the resort.

Lazarevskoye is located 42 kilometers northwest of Central Sochi and 135 kilometers south of Krasnodar. The distance to Adler Airport is 95 kilometers, and the railway station is located right in the settlement, making it convenient for transportation.

On the streets of Lazarevskoye, small 2-3 story houses predominate. For many local residents, renting out part of their housing is one of the sources of income, especially during the high season.

Interesting Facts About Lazarevskoye

The Black Sea, which washes the coast of Lazarevskoye, is one of the youngest seas on Earth. Eight thousand years ago, it was still a freshwater lake. Scientists believe that several tens of millions of years ago, the Azov, Mediterranean, Caspian, Black, and Aral Seas were part of an ancient ocean. Gradually, the bay fragmented, and about a million years ago, the basin of the future Black Sea became isolated as a freshwater body. As a result of an earthquake that formed the Bosphorus Strait, salty marine waters mixed with freshwater, forming the modern body of water.

Numerous rivers carry their waters, enriched with impurities, into the sea — this is why the Black Sea water shimmers with a rich range of shades from turquoise to dark blue.

The climate of Lazarevskoye differs slightly from central Sochi: in winter it is 0.2°C cooler, and in summer 0.2°C warmer — this is easily explained by the amount of precipitation and air humidity, as well as the heat capacity of water and air.

The pebble beaches stretch along the seashore for 100 kilometers, creating a continuous resort zone. In the mountain gorges, you can find unique ecosystems where subtropical vegetation gives way to alpine meadows.
