History of St. James Cathedral: From Romanesque to Brick Gothic

The construction of the Gothic church was completed at the end of the 14th century under the direction of the Szczecin master Heinrich Brunsberg. The cathedral's fate was not an easy one: the Hussites burned it down immediately after construction was completed, but the church was restored after the end of the Hussite Wars. The design called for two towers, but the second one was never completed. In 1894, a spire 119 meters high was installed on the tower, which was destroyed during the bombing of August 16, 1944. After the 2008 reconstruction, the tower height is 110.80 meters, with an observation deck at the top. Inside the church are the relics of Saint Otto of Bamberg and the heart of composer Carl Loewe, who worked in the city for nearly 50 years.
