Wintergreen Resort Tubing Slope in Virginia — Online Webcam
Where the Wintergreen Slope Is Located
This live webcam streams the slope of Wintergreen Resort, located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwestern Virginia. The resort sits on the border of Nelson and Augusta counties, approximately 45 kilometers west of Charlottesville. The camera is positioned so that the frame captures not only the slope itself with the conveyor tubing lift but also the surrounding forest — from here you can observe wildlife at any time of year.
Why the Resort Is Called Wintergreen
The resort's name comes from the plant Gaultheria procumbens, known as wintergreen, teaberry, or checkerberry. This is an evergreen shrub that becomes covered with bright red berries in winter. If you squeeze a berry between your fingers, a characteristic sweet aroma appears — it is this scent that gave the entire resort its name. The Wintergreen Resort logo is stylized after the leaves and fruits of this plant. Gaultheria grows abundantly on the slopes of the Blue Ridge, so the name turned out to be not just a marketing move but a reflection of a real natural feature of the area.
Geology of the Blue Ridge: What's Underfoot
The slope shown by the camera is part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, one of the oldest mountain systems in North America. The rocks here began forming over a billion years ago, in the Precambrian period. The geological profile includes granitic charnockites, metamorphosed volcanic formations, and sedimentary limestones. The modern landscape is the result of tectonic processes that transformed an ancient anticline into an inverted structure. In central Virginia, the ridge rises above 1,200 meters with local elevation differences of up to 1,000 meters. The eastern slope of the Blue Ridge is characterized by rugged topography — elevation changes range from 300 to 900 meters over short distances.
Animals You Can See on the Slope
The forests around the resort are inhabited by typical Appalachian species. The slopes are regularly visited by white-tailed deer, black bears, coyotes, and red foxes. The bears here are so accustomed to people that there have been cases of them breaking into cars and even the resort's fire station. Squirrels leap through the treetops, and wild turkeys can be spotted at the forest edges. The resort is home to The Nature Foundation at Wintergreen — an organization that rehabilitates injured animals and runs educational programs. A special Bear Smart program has been developed for resort guests, offering recommendations for safe coexistence with bears.
Four Seasons of Outdoor Activities
Wintergreen Resort is positioned as a four-season resort. In winter, visitors ski and snowboard, and The Plunge — Virginia's largest tubing park operates right on the slope shown by the camera. In spring, summer, and fall, the slopes transform into venues for other activities: mountain bike routes wind through the forests, and hiking trails of varying difficulty are available — from leisurely walks along Lake Monacan to challenging ascents on Three Ridges. The resort features two golf courses — Devil's Knob at elevation with panoramic ridge views, and Stony Creek in the valley. In summer, the indoor Aquatics & Fitness Center pool is open, and the Discovery Ridge Adventure Center with a climbing wall operates.
Resort History: From 8 Slopes to a Four-Season Complex
The resort was founded in 1975 as a ski complex with eight slopes and three chairlifts. The opening was conducted by then-Virginia Lieutenant Governor Mills Godwin. Since then, the resort has grown into a full-fledged four-season complex with its own lake, golf courses, tennis courts, and a spa center. The name Wintergreen was chosen deliberately — it reflects a natural feature of the region, where wild gaultheria covers the ridge slopes year-round.
What You Can See on the Camera
This live webcam shows the Wintergreen hill slope with a conveyor lift — a carpet escalator that carries tubers to the top. On the left side of the frame, a wooden deck with stairs and metal railings is visible — this is the unloading and waiting area. At the bottom of the frame is a platform with artificial green surfacing. On the right is an information sign with the resort logo. Around the slope are grassy areas with trees and shrubs where wild animals sometimes appear. The camera allows you to assess current conditions on the slope: snow cover, weather, tubing activity — all visible right now.
