Lion's Head: The Symbol of Cape Town

Lion's Head is one of Cape Town's most iconic landmarks, situated between the famous Table Mountain and Signal Hill. Its elevation is 669 meters above sea level. The name "Lion's Head" (Leeuwen Kop) was given by Dutch colonists in the 17th century — the mountain's shape reminded them of a crouching lion. The neighboring Signal Hill was named Leeuwen Stert (Lion's Tail). The early Khoisan name for the mountain is "Hura," meaning "mountain of the sea".

Hiking Lion's Head is a popular trail among tourists and locals alike. The starting point of the route is in the Tamboerskloof neighborhood, opposite the turnoff to Table Mountain. From the parking lot on Signal Hill Road, the trail winds around the mountain, and after about 45 minutes of walking, it splits into two options for reaching the summit. The ascent takes approximately 1 hour. From the top, panoramic views unfold of Table Mountain, the Twelve Apostles, Camps Bay, Clifton beaches, City Bowl, and the vast Atlantic Ocean.

Sea Point: Life on the Atlantic Shore

Sea Point is located on a narrow strip of land between Lion's Head and the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of Cape Town's most densely populated and vibrant suburbs, where urban development meets coastal greenery and rocky shoreline. The main attraction of the area runs along the coast — the Sea Point Promenade, a pedestrian walkway stretching about 6–7 km. It is a popular spot for walking, running, and cycling, free from vehicle traffic.

Along the shore runs a coastal road with a green buffer zone, and in the Mouille Point area, between Green Point and Sea Point, stands the Green Point Lighthouse. It was commissioned on April 12, 1824, and is the first lighthouse built in South Africa. Nearby is Green Point Urban Park — a green recreational area with ocean views.

Climate and Weather on the Atlantic Coast

The Atlantic coast of Cape Town is characterized by a cool climate. The average annual sea surface temperature on the Atlantic Seaboard (including Sea Point and Camps Bay) is around 13°C. Even in summer, water temperatures rarely rise above +18°C. For comparison, in False Bay on the eastern coast, the water is significantly warmer — about 17°C, closer to Northern Mediterranean temperatures.

The Atlantic coast is typically 2–3°C cooler than False Bay due to the influence of cold currents and characteristic winds. Cape Town is known for the famous "Cape Doctor" wind — a strong southeasterly wind typical of late spring. The Berg Wind is also characteristic — a mountain wind blowing from inland areas from February to March, which can cause intense heat.

From Sea Point, it is easy to reach Cape Town's main attractions. Table Mountain — the city's calling card and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World — is just a short distance away. The cableway to the summit operates daily, offering panoramic views of the city and ocean.

Clifton Beaches — four picturesque beaches sheltered from the wind by granite boulders — are popular with locals and tourists alike. Camps Bay, with its wide sandy beach and waterfront restaurants, is the perfect spot for sunset. Signal Hill, Lion's Head's neighbor, offers excellent sunset views and is a popular picnic destination.

How to Get to Sea Point

Sea Point is a 5–10 minute drive from Cape Town's city center (City Bowl). The main modes of transport are car or taxi (Uber operates in the city). Main Road runs along the coast — the area's main artery. Parking in Sea Point is available along the promenade and on neighborhood streets, though spaces may be limited during peak hours.

For pedestrians and runners, Sea Point Promenade offers a convenient route along the ocean. From the city center, it is a 30–40 minute walk through Green Point Park. Public transport (MyCiTi bus) connects Sea Point with downtown Cape Town and the V&A Waterfront.
