Sæbø, Norway — Online Webcam with Hjørundfjord View
Sæbø: From Postal Station to Ski Resort
The small settlement of Sæbø in western Norway has undergone several transformations to become what it is today. In the 19th century, it served as a relay postal station along the fjord route, where travelers changed horses and rested after a grueling journey. Later, a roadside inn appeared — essentially a tavern for voyagers heading toward the coast. Today, Sæbø is known primarily as a ski resort and gateway to one of the country's most impressive fjords. The historic wooden architecture has been preserved here in remarkable integrity, creating the atmosphere of old Norway.
Hjørundfjord: One of the Wettest Fjords on Earth
Hjørundfjord stretches for 205 kilometers from the coast into the mountains, cutting deep into the land like a wedge. Its maximum depth reaches 1,300 meters, making it one of the deepest fjords in Norway. But Hjørundfjord's defining feature is its rainfall. This fjord is considered one of the wettest in the world: the surrounding mountains trap moist Atlantic air masses, creating a unique microclimate. Both shores are densely forested, and picturesque waterfalls cascade from high cliffs into the water, feeding the fjord with fresh water.
The Sunnmøre Alps: A Mountain Wonderland
The mountains surrounding Hjørundfjord are called the Sunnmøre Alps — a mountain range that attracts climbers and hikers from across Europe. Peaks here rise to over 1,700 meters, and the tundra zone begins at around one kilometer in altitude. In autumn, the slopes transform: blueberry and lingonberry leaves turn red, creating a colorful carpet against the gray rock faces. Among the popular summits are Slogen, Råna, Jønshorn, and Kolåstinden, each offering routes of varying difficulty. Many stunning locations are accessible only by foot or cable car, preserving their pristine beauty.

Attractions and Outdoor Activities
Sæbø sits on the edge of the Fjordane Nature Reserve, ensuring the preservation of natural landscapes. Tourists can enjoy numerous natural ski slopes for all skill levels. Fishing on the fjord is a special treat: Hjørundfjord's waters are home to cod, haddock, and halibut. Historic wooden buildings have been preserved in the village and surrounding area, and nearby Ålesund hosts the Sunnmøre Museum, an open-air museum featuring over 50 historic Norwegian houses. It's a place where you can literally touch the region's past.
