The building's facade is clad in marble and granite — expensive materials that underscored the status of the facility as the main gateway to Abkhazia for rail transport. Today the building holds the status of a historical and architectural monument, however, as of 2022, it is reported to be in a state of disrepair.

In 1940, the section from Ingur to Sukhumi opened, and two years later — in 1942 — the Sukhumi–Adler line began operating, connecting Abkhazia with the Russian Black Sea coast.
