In the literature of that time, the water body was referred to as a "lake," and the name stuck. Despite the fact that in Gaelic "loch" translates to "lake," the name Lake of Menteith has survived to this day.

History of Port of Menteith: From Burgh to Landing

The village was founded as a burgh in 1457 by King James III of Scotland. Originally called "Am Port," it served as an important landing for the islands of Inchmahome and Inch Talla. Today it is the only significant settlement on the lake's shore, situated at an altitude of about 25 metres above sea level. According to census data, only about 200 people live here.

Inchmahome Island and Mary Stewart

The largest island on the lake is Inchmahome. It is home to the ruins of Inchmahome Priory, an Augustinian monastery founded around 1238 by Walter Comyn, Earl of Menteith. The monastery is known for having served as a refuge for the future Queen of Scots. Mary Stewart was brought here in September 1547 at the age of 4 for safety following the defeat of the Scottish army at the Battle of Pinkie.

Fishing and the Nature of the Menteith Hills

Lake of Menteith is surrounded by picturesque hills and lies on the floodplain of the Forth and Teith rivers. It is a popular destination among anglers, particularly for rainbow and brown trout fishing. Only fly fishing from a boat is permitted here, preserving the pristine tranquillity of the area.
