History and Origin of the Name Icacos Beach
The name "Icacos" has deep roots dating back to the pre-Columbian era. It comes from the shrub Chrysobalanus icaco — a local plant widely used by the indigenous population of the region. This evergreen shrub with plum-like fruits is still found in the coastal areas of Mexico.
The Icacos area in Acapulco was actively developed in the 1950s–1970s as the Acapulco Dorado resort zone — Golden Acapulco. It was during this period that the coastline began attracting international tourists, and the beach became one of the main symbols of the Mexican resort.
Geographical Location and Features of the Bay
Playa Icacos stretches for 2060 meters along the coastline, making it the longest beach in Acapulco Bay. It is located in the eastern part of the bay, in the prestigious Zona Dorada (Golden Zone), east of the equally famous Condesa beach.
A distinctive feature of this place is its direct access to the Pacific Ocean, which creates fairly strong waves. At the same time, the water at Icacos Beach is noticeably cleaner, and the bottom is more gradual compared to other beaches in the bay — making it convenient for families with children.
Climate and Weather Conditions on the Coast
The climate of Acapulco is classified as tropical wet and dry (Köppen: Aw). The sun shines here approximately 360 days a year, and the average summer air temperature is +30°C with a light sea breeze.
The water temperature in the bay stays around +29°C year-round (ranging from +28.9°C to +29.7°C). These conditions are ideal for swimming in any season — whether it's the dry season from November to April or the wet period from June to October.
Infrastructure and Attractions Near the Beach
Icacos Beach is surrounded by well-developed tourist infrastructure. Nearby are large hotels, luxury condominiums, shopping centers, and restaurants. To the east of the beach is the Acapulco Convention Center spanning 15 hectares, where the famous Acapulco Festival takes place in May.
The area is also home to the Acapulco naval base, which gives the locality a special character. Despite this, beach access is free and open to everyone.
Icacos Beach as a Tourist Destination
Playa Icacos is one of the busiest and most famous beaches in resort Acapulco. It ranks 7th out of 12 attractions in the city according to Lonely Planet. The beach is popular for water sports: banana boat rides, water skiing, parasailing.
Unlike neighboring Condesa, Icacos Beach is less crowded and is considered a great spot for watching summer sunsets. The sandy coastline with tall palm trees creates a classic tropical landscape that attracts travelers from around the world.
