Albrecht von Wallenstein and His Dream of a Capital
The history of the square is inextricably linked to the name of one of the most controversial figures of the Thirty Years' War. Albrecht von Wallenstein acquired the town of Jičín in 1621 and built an extensive palace complex here. His ambitions were truly imperial: the commander planned to turn Jičín into the capital of his Duchy of Friedland. To this end, a palace, a church, a collegiate chapter house were erected, and gardens were laid out. Wallenstein minted his own coinage here and conducted diplomatic correspondence with European courts.
Wallenstein's status at the time was colossal. He held the title of Duke of Friedland (1623–1634), became Duke of Sagan in 1627, and Duke of Mecklenburg from 1628 to 1632. However, his career ended tragically: in 1634, Wallenstein was assassinated in Cheb. After his death, the town passed into the possession of Rudolf von Tiefenbach and gradually lost its capital splendor, turning into a quiet provincial center.
The Architectural Ensemble of the Square
Wallenstein Square in Jičín is an elongated space framed by the facades of Renaissance and Baroque houses. The ground floors of many buildings are adorned with arcades — a characteristic feature of Czech squares from the Renaissance era. Red tiled roofs create a picturesque contrast with the colorful facades — from soft blue to dark ochre.
Three key structures serve as the dominant features of the square. The Renaissance Valdice Tower — a former watchtower of the castle complex. Wallenstein Palace — a monumental three-winged building surrounding an inner courtyard. And the Baroque Church of St. James the Great, completing the perspective of the square from the south.
Fountains and Sculptures
The central part of the square is adorned with several fountains and sculptural groups. The Marian Column — a typical feature of Czech squares from the Counter-Reformation era, erected in gratitude to the Virgin Mary for deliverance from epidemics and wars. Nearby stands the fountain with a statue of Amphitrite — a sea goddess from ancient mythology, underscoring Wallenstein's humanist aspirations. The square also features the Coronation Fountain, a reminder that Jičín once aspired to the role of a capital.
Legends and Mysteries of the Square
Like many Czech towns, Jičín is shrouded in legends. One of the darkest is associated with the night watchman Ruprecht. According to legend, Ruprecht boasted that he was the best trumpeter in town, and Wallenstein, who suffered from toothache and could not stand the sound of a trumpet, angrily ordered his head cut off. This story has become part of local folklore and still attracts lovers of mystical mysteries.

Modern Jičín is a town with a population of about 16,000, popular among tourists as the gateway to the Bohemian Paradise (Český ráj) nature reserve. Wallenstein Square remains the center of public life: markets, concerts, and festivals are held here. Cafés and shops operate in the arcades, and on weekends the square fills with pedestrians.
