History of Courthouse Square in Santa Rosa
Old Courthouse Square has been the heart of Santa Rosa since the city's founding. This area was originally laid out as a parade ground in the early 1800s and became the site of the grand county courthouse building. For 82 years, justice was served here for Sonoma County, shaping the destiny of the region.
In 1906, the catastrophic San Francisco earthquake destroyed the courthouse on the square. The cornerstone of the last courthouse on this square was laid in 1908. The new building stood until 1966, when Sonoma County had grown and outgrown its walls. The demolition of the courthouse allowed Santa Rosa Avenue to be extended and connected to Mendocino Avenue, and the granite steps of the old building were preserved and incorporated into the renovated square as a memorial to the past.
Architectural Heritage: Empire Building and Surroundings
One of the architectural landmarks of the square is the Empire Building, constructed after the 1906 earthquake and completed in 1910. This building survived the devastating tremors and became a symbol of Santa Rosa's recovery. Its facade still adorns the square today, reminiscent of the early 20th century when the city was being rebuilt from the ground up.
The architectural ensemble of the square is a blend of styles from different eras — from classical early-century facades to more modern buildings. The hilly landscape on the horizon creates a picturesque backdrop characteristic of the Santa Rosa Valley surrounded by the vineyard hills of Sonoma.
Division and Reunification: Transformation of Space
The square was once a single space of 1.5 acres that was long divided by a four-lane road. Fourth Street split the square into two parts, disrupting the historical integrity of the public space. City life continued, but the square lost its original function as a unified center.
In 2017, a large-scale reunification project restored the square's historic appearance. The road was closed, and the two halves once again became a single public space. The renovation created a continuous plaza with green lawns, paved pedestrian walkways, and seating areas — a true heart of the city without automobile traffic running through the middle.
Events and Activities at the Square
Old Courthouse Square is the main venue for city events in Santa Rosa. From May to September, a farmers' market operates here with local produce, artisan goods, and flowers. But the real gem is the Wednesday Night Market, Sonoma County's premier street fair, which runs every Wednesday for 14 weeks and attracts an average of 7,000 visitors per evening.
