Făgăraș — a city in the heart of Transylvania
Făgăraș is a small Romanian city in Brașov County, located in the historical region of Transylvania. It lies at the foot of the Făgăraș Mountains, which are part of the Southern Carpathians and represent the highest mountain range in Romania. The city is situated approximately 65 kilometers northwest of Brașov and 70 kilometers east of Sibiu. The population of Făgăraș is around 30,000 people, making it one of the larger cities in the region.
Făgăraș has a rich history connected to the Transylvanian Saxons, the Romanian population, and Hungarian influence. The city was an important administrative center for centuries. Piața Republicii a fost centrul politico-administrativ al Tinutului Făgăraș, which underscores its significance in the region. Today, Făgăraș attracts tourists with its architecture, fortress, and proximity to mountain landscapes.
History of Republic Square
Republic Square (Piața Republicii) is the central square of Făgăraș, which for centuries has been the heart of city life. Markets, public gatherings, and festivals were held here. The square is surrounded by historic buildings with classical architecture, many of which were built in the 18th–19th centuries.
In the Middle Ages, Făgăraș was an important fortified stronghold. Cetatea Făgăraș a fost distrusă în mijlocul sec. XIII, probabil în legătură cu invazia mongolă din 1241. After the destruction, the city was rebuilt, and the square became a place where major trade routes converged. In the 19th century, after the unification of Transylvania with Romania, the square received its modern name — Republic Square.
Architecture and Landmarks of the Square
The architecture of Piața Republicii reflects different eras and styles. Around the square are two- and three-story buildings with characteristic Transylvanian features: painted facades, tiled roofs, and arched openings. Many of these buildings once belonged to wealthy merchants and craftsmen.
On the square stands Biserica Ortodoxă Română Sfânta Treime — an Orthodox church that serves as the spiritual center of the local community. The church is built in a traditional style and harmoniously fits into the architectural ensemble of the square. Nearby is another church — Saint John the Theologian — which was reconstructed in a modern style while preserving traditional elements.
The square is adorned with greenery, pedestrian pathways, and street lamps. In winter, a large Christmas tree decorated with garlands is installed here, creating a festive atmosphere. The building facades are illuminated at night, highlighting architectural details.
Făgăraș Fortress — Symbol of the City
Făgăraș Fortress (Cetatea Făgăraș) is one of the most impressive medieval fortresses in Romania. It is located in close proximity to Republic Square and is visible from many points in the city. The fortress was built as a powerful defensive structure with a system of bastions and moats.
La fiecare colț al Cetății Făgăraș se află câte un bastion — this is a unique feature of the fortification that made the fortress virtually impregnable. The fortress is surrounded by a water moat that has survived to this day. Inside the fortress walls are a museum, a library, and exhibition halls.
Throughout history, the fortress served as a residence for Transylvanian princes, a military base, and even a prison. Today it is a museum and one of the main tourist attractions of the region. From the camera on Republic Square, you can see part of the fortress walls and towers, creating a picturesque panorama.

By car, Făgăraș can be reached via the DN1 national road, which connects Bucharest to Brașov and further into Transylvania. There is also a railway connection — the Făgăraș station is within a few minutes' walk from the square.
