This number is not accidental: the nine sectors symbolize the Rule of the Nine (Noveschi), which governed the city during its medieval heyday from 1287 to 1355. The square was designed in the 1320s, and the length of its circumference is 333 meters.

Palazzo Pubblico and Torre del Mangia

Dominating the center of the frame is Palazzo Pubblico — a Gothic palace with a crenellated cornice and arcades. It was built in 1297–1310 as the seat of the Sienese Republic government. Nearby rises the Torre del Mangia — the tallest tower in Siena and the Tuscany region. Its construction began under the direction of brothers Francesco and Muccio Rinaldi and was completed in 1338–1348. The height of the structure is 87–88 meters (about 102 meters with the lightning rod). The tower's name is associated with the first bell ringer Giovanni di Balduccio, who became famous for spending all his earnings on food and pleasures. The townspeople nicknamed him Mangiaguadagni, later shortened to Mangia.

Palio — Bareback Horse Race

Piazza del Campo is known worldwide for the Palio — historic bareback horse races held twice a year: July 2 and August 16. The contrade (city districts) have participated in the Palio since 1555, when their official boundaries were established. Forty days before the race, a lottery ceremony is held to determine the additional contrade participants. Inside Palazzo Pubblico are kept the symbols of these victories and masterpieces of painting, including Ambrogio Lorenzetti's famous frescoes Allegory of Good and Bad Government and works by Simone Martini.
