From the 17th century, Pornic-sur-Mer became one of the most important ports for cod fishing off the shores of Terra Nova. Fishermen from here sailed for cod to the coasts of Newfoundland, and this heritage is still felt in the architecture and atmosphere of the old town. In 1882, with the arrival of the railway, the town began to transform into a seaside resort, but the port retained its fishing identity.
During dredging works in the old port, Gallo-Roman baths were discovered, testifying that these places were inhabited even during the times of the Roman Empire. Pornic Castle and the port remain the main symbols of the town, attracting thousands of tourists every year.
Fishing Traditions and Maritime Heritage
The old fishing port of Pornic-sur-Mer is still operational. It is home to 25 trawlers, unloading around 800 tonnes of fresh fish annually. The catches are dominated by sea bass, halibut, turbot and crayfish — all of which form the basis of local cuisine and attract gourmets from all over France.

Shipwrecks and Maritime Tragedies
The history of the port is inseparably linked to the tragic pages of the maritime past. On June 14, 1931, a disaster occurred that went down in history as the wreck of the "Saint-Philibert." The steamer, built by the "Chantiers Dubigeon" shipyard in Nantes in 1923 for coastal navigation and on the Loire estuary, set out from Nantes for the island of Noirmoutier with passengers on board. Due to a storm, the flat-bottomed vessel, adapted for estuary navigation but unstable in a stormy sea, capsized. Passengers without life jackets gathered on the upper deck, which increased instability, and the shift to starboard to avoid waves led to a dangerous heel. According to various sources, around 467–500 people fell victim to the disaster.
Another tragic page was the bombing of the "Lancastria" in 1940, when German aviation bombed the ship, which sank in 24 minutes, leaving behind a sea covered in fuel oil. In 2022, archaeologists discovered 10 mysterious shipwrecks from the 17th and 18th centuries in the Loire on the Coton island, testifying to the rich and sometimes dangerous maritime history of this region.
Tides and Natural Features of the Bay
The Port of Pornic-sur-Mer is located in a semi-diurnal tidal zone: the sea rises and falls twice a day. The tidal height can reach 5.20 m, while the low level is approximately 0.44 m. The port is accessible at all tides except during large syzygy spring low waters for vessels with deep draft.
The Bay of Bourgneuf significantly affects the tidal phenomena in this area. The Pornic Ria serves as the outlet to the sea for the Vertou-Perché marshlands, creating a unique ecosystem. The cliffs of Sainte-sur-Mer and Clion-sur-Mer, which have been inhabited for millennia, give the coastline its special character. In 1973, the commune of Pornic-sur-Mer absorbed the neighboring municipalities of Sainte-sur-Mer and Clion-sur-Mer, expanding its territory.
Crafts and Cultural Life of the Town
Besides fishing, Pornic-sur-Mer is known for its artisanal traditions. The "Faïencerie de Pornic" pottery workshop has been operating since 1947, preserving a unique artisanal production. The products of local craftsmen have become the visiting card of the region.
