Passo San Pellegrino: a pilgrim's route through the Dolomites

Rifugio Col Margherita: a refuge at 2,584 meters
Directly above the pass, atop Col Margherita mountain, at an altitude of 2,584 meters, lies the mountain refuge — Rifugio Col Margherita. This is the highest rifugio in the Pale di San Martino massif and the highest refuge in Dolomiti Superski that can be reached directly by cable car. It was built in 1963 simultaneously with the chairlift.
The refuge is named after Queen Margherita of Savoy — the first queen of unified Italy, who loved these places. The rifugio grounds feature an active weather station, and on clear days the panoramic terrace offers a 360-degree all-around view. This is one of those vantage points where the Dolomites reveal themselves in all their grandeur — without exaggeration.
Col Margherita cable car: ten minutes above the clouds
The gondola cable car connects Passo San Pellegrino (1,918 m) with the summit of Col Margherita (2,584 m). The journey takes about 10 minutes. During this time, the cabin climbs more than 600 meters vertically, and passengers watch as alpine meadows give way to bare rock faces, and the horizon expands with every minute of the ascent.

Passo San Pellegrino at the Giro d'Italia: legendary stages
The pass first appeared on the Giro d'Italia route in 1970. Since then, it has been regularly included in the race program, often serving as a warm-up before the climb to Marmolada — the highest pass in the Dolomites.
The climb from Canazei is about 19.3 km long with an elevation gain of approximately 800 meters. The average gradient is 5.5%, and on some sections the slope reaches 10%. From Moena, the route is shorter — about 14 km — but the average gradient is steeper at 6.5%. The climb is classified as category 2 (sometimes category 1), and its main difficulty lies not in extreme gradients but in the considerable length, the windiness of the pass, and the fact that an even harder climb often follows on the same stage.

From an altitude of 2,584 meters, the view encompasses virtually all the key massifs of the Eastern Dolomites. To the north rises the Pale di San Martino massif with its crown — Cima della Vezzana and Cimon della Pala. To the the south dominates the highest mountain in the Dolomites — Marmolada (3,343 m) with its glacier, the only glacier in the Dolomites that has survived to this day.

The Col Margherita chairlift is a key piece of infrastructure. It operates from December to April in the winter season and from June to September in summer.
