Sion Golf Course in the Rhône Valley — Live Webcam
The History of the Golf Course in the Heart of Valais
The idea of creating a golf club in the capital of the canton of Valais was born in the late seventies. Sion Golf Club was founded in 1978 by a group of enthusiasts as a driving range on the Les Iles site. For a long time, this place served only for practicing shots, but ambitions grew. The decisive step toward creating a full-fledged course was taken in the late nineties. In 1998, the club, under the leadership of president Bernard Detienne, received support from the state of Valais, the prefecture of the Sion district, the municipality, the Bourgeoisie organization, and the Asile hospital. This made it possible to transform the modest training ground into a full-scale international-level course.
Landscape and Climate: The Sunny Rhône Valley
Sion is famous for its microclimate, which sets it apart from other alpine regions. Sion Golf Course is an 18-hole course spanning 42 hectares, located in the heart of the canton of Valais in the Rhône Valley at an altitude of 500 meters. It is exceptionally sunny here, which is rare for mountainous Switzerland. The course is situated "in the hollow of the Rhône Valley" (dans le creux de la vallée du Rhône), at the foot of terraced vineyards, which creates natural wind protection and unique climatic conditions. The dry and warm air allows playing here for most of the year, enjoying the comfort.
Valère and Tourbillon Castles: A Medieval Backdrop for the Game
One of Sion's main attractions is its medieval architecture, which serves as a picturesque backdrop for golf. From the golf course, there is an exceptional panoramic view of the castles of Valère and Tourbillon, as well as the terraced vineyards and the Rhône Valley. These majestic structures have towered over the town since the 13th century on rocky hills (610 m and 658 m respectively). The Valère Basilica is a Swiss heritage site of national significance, and the ruins of Tourbillon are a reminder of the region's rich history. Playing golf with such a backdrop means getting an aesthetic pleasure.
Features of the 18-Hole Course
The course in Sion is designed to blend harmoniously with the surrounding landscape. Manicured greens, strategically placed bunkers, and trees create an interesting terrain for players of any level. The terraced vineyards descending the slopes not only beautify the landscape but also form a unique microclimate. This is a place where sport meets nature and history, making every round of golf unforgettable.
