The name of the place speaks for itself: "Piediluco" translates as "at the foot of the sacred forest". Indeed, Monte Luco, on whose slope the village is located, was in ancient times covered by a sacred forest revered by the locals. The lake is fed by three rivers: Rio Fuscello, Velino, and Nera, which ensures its cleanliness and constant water level.
Rocca di Piediluco: Guardian of the Lake
The main architectural landmark of the area is Rocca di Piediluco, a 14th-century medieval fortress, towering over the village and the lake on Monte Luco. The history of the fortress is full of dramatic events. In 1330, Rieti and Spoleto united to destroy the Ghibelline fortress, but their campaign was halted by the intervention of Pope Benedict XII. Monte Luco, on which the fortress stands, was in ancient times covered by a sacred forest, which gave this place a special sacred significance.
