Oberwiesenthal and Keilberg — Live Webcam Online
Oberwiesenthal — Germany's Highest Town
Oberwiesenthal sits at an elevation of 914 meters above sea level — making it the highest town in Germany. The settlement is located in the state of Saxony, in the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge), right on the border with the Czech Republic. Thanks to its location, the town attracts tourists year-round: skiers in winter, hikers and cyclists in summer.
Oberwiesenthal officially holds the status of a climatic health resort and ski center. It is Germany's oldest ski resort with well-developed infrastructure. The town is surrounded by coniferous and deciduous forests, and the mountain peaks offer panoramic views on both sides of the German-Czech border.
Keilberg and Fichtelberg: Peaks of the Ore Mountains
In the background of the webcam view stands Keilberg (Klínovec) — the highest peak of the Ore Mountains at 1,243.7 meters. A 27-meter observation tower stands at its summit, offering views of both the German and Czech sides of the mountain range.
Nearby rises Fichtelberg (1,215 m) — the highest point in Saxony and the second-highest mountain in the Ore Mountains. The border between Germany and the Czech Republic runs between these two peaks. The Fichtelberg Schwebebahn suspension railway carries tourists to the summit for panoramic views.
Skiing Traditions and Olympic Champions
The history of ski jumping in Oberwiesenthal began as early as 1911 at the Schönjungferngrund hill. The modern Fichtelberg ski jump was built in 1938 and has been upgraded several times since then.
Today, the Oberwiesenthal training center features 7 ski jumps that can be used year-round thanks to modern equipment. Legendary Jens Weißflog trained here — an Olympic and world champion ski jumper who competed for local clubs SC Tractor Oberwiesenthal and Oberwiesenthaler SV.
Christmas Crafts of the Ore Mountains
The Ore Mountains are a region with a rich history of ore mining, reflected in the name itself (Erz means ore). When the mines closed, local craftsmen turned to woodworking. Today, Erzgebirge Holzkunst is a world-renowned tradition of folk crafts.
The region is famous for its Christmas traditions: wooden nativity scenes, glowing figurines of angels and miners (Bergmann), Christmas pyramids, and Schwibbogen candle arches. Oberwiesenthal is home to craft workshops where visitors can watch these traditional items being made.
What to See in Oberwiesenthal
The town offers diverse recreation in every season. In winter — ski runs, a toboggan run from Fichtelberg to the valley, ice rinks, and swimming pools. In summer — hiking trails, cycling tours, zip lines, and rock climbing.
Among the attractions: visitor mines where you can descend into historic shafts, the old town center with half-timbered buildings, churches with towers, and mining museums. The region also hosts traditional festivals and fairs, including the famous Bergparade mountain parade.
Natural Beauty of the Region
The Ore Mountains are a unique natural landscape formed over millions of years. Mountain meadows, coniferous forests, marshes, and peat bogs create a diverse ecosystem. The summits of Fichtelberg and Keilberg are home to nature reserves with rare plant species.
The Pöhlbach stream flows through Oberwiesenthal, marking the border with the Czech Republic. In clear weather, the peaks offer views stretching for tens of kilometers — ideal conditions for photography and nature observation.
