History of the Nizhny Tagil Circus: from the first tent to the modern arena

Circus art came to Nizhny Tagil long before a permanent building appeared. The circus first arrived in Nizhny Tagil in the summer of 1885, when the family circus-tent of M. Truzzi performed in the city. Since then, traveling artists regularly visited the Ural city, but there was no permanent arena for a long time.

The first permanent circus building appeared in 1931 on the site of the current Puppet Theatre — a frame-and-fill insulated structure supervised by B. Muratov. However, the wooden building lasted only 16 years, and by 1953 it had deteriorated and was demolished. The city made do with temporary tents for nearly two decades until construction of the modern building began.

Architecture and design of the octagonal building

The modern octagonal circus building with a dome was constructed in 1975 based on a standard design — work had begun as early as 1969. The Nizhny Tagil Circus is distinguished by its large, wide dome with a decorative "crown" at the top. The building is two stories, octagonal in shape, with a long annex for utility purposes — housing animals, artist rest areas, and administration.

The circus is located at Pervomayskaya Street, 8A, on the northern shore of Tagil Pond in the Leninsky district of the city, right in the center. This location has long been one of the calling cards of Nizhny Tagil — the octagonal building with its wide tent dome is recognizable in city panoramas.

2017 renovation: the circus finds a second life

The large-scale renovation of the building took two years, and on September 23, 2017, a completely new, ultra-modern circus opened its doors to audiences. The renovation cost exceeded 500 million rubles — in the 40 years since the building's construction, a major overhaul was carried out for the first time.

After the renovation, the circus received modern technical equipment, new auditoriums, and improved conditions for artists and animals. At the same time, the historical appearance of the building — the recognizable octagonal silhouette with a decorative crown on the dome — was fully preserved.

Bondin Park and the Tagil Pond embankment

The area around the circus is not just the arena itself but also an extensive green zone. Nearby is the Bondin Park of Culture and Leisure, which together with the Tagil Pond embankment forms a single recreational complex in the center of Nizhny Tagil. The northern shore of the pond, where the circus stands, is a popular walking spot among locals and visitors.

The embankment with its water expanse is visible from above — the river and pond create a picturesque contrast with the urban development. Green plantings, lawns, and trees are distributed throughout the territory, making this part of Nizhny Tagil one of the most well-maintained.

The area around the circus: Pervomayskaya Street and the city center
