Ada Bridge in Belgrade — online webcam over the Sava
Cable-stayed bridge over the Sava — a symbol of modern Belgrade
The Bridge over Ada (Most na Adi) is a cable-stayed bridge over the Sava River in Belgrade, Serbia, which crosses the tip of Ada Ciganlija island, connecting the municipalities of Čukarica and New Belgrade. This structure has become a true architectural dominant of the city and one of the most recognizable engineering landmarks in the Balkans. The online camera overlooking the bridge allows you to observe traffic and enjoy the panorama of the Sava at any time of day.
The bridge is the highest bridge in the city, the second tallest structure in the city after the Avala Tower, and the first bridge built in Belgrade in the last 40 years. Its silhouette with a high pylon and a fan-like cable system has become a hallmark of the Serbian capital and frequently appears on postcards and in guidebooks.
Construction history
Construction of the bridge began in 2008, and the bridge was officially opened on January 1, 2012. The design of the structure was developed with the participation of leading engineers and architects of the region. The design project was approved in spring 2005 by a jury chaired by Nikola Hajdin, president of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts; in the autumn of the same year, the project was approved by the Belgrade Association of Architects.
The chief designer is engineer Viktor Markelj, the architect is Peter Gabrijelčič, who have been working together for over 25 years on bridge projects; the design bureau is Arhitektura d.o.o. Their collaborative work on cable-stayed bridges is recognized in the professional community, and the Bridge over Ada became one of their most significant joint projects.
Technical specifications
The total length of the bridge is 964 meters, and the pylon height is 200 meters. These impressive figures make it one of the largest cable-stayed bridges in Europe. The bridge pylon is located on Ada Ciganlija island, which was reinforced with a large amount of concrete and slightly expanded to create a more solid foundation; the foundation depth of the pylon is 40 meters due to the sandy soil.
The bridge was built using the incremental launching method and has a semi-fan cable system. This design provides high resistance to wind loads and seismic impacts, which is especially important for the seismically active Balkan region. The bridge carries a roadway, tram tracks, and pedestrian walkways.
Ada Ciganlija Island — the green heart of Belgrade
Ada Ciganlija island and lake (Ada Ciganlija) is a popular recreational area with beaches and parks near the bridge. It is a magnet for Belgraders and city guests: there are sports grounds, bike paths, cafes, and restaurants. The lake is formed by a branch of the Sava and warms up to a comfortable temperature in summer, turning into an urban beach with infrastructure.
The Bridge over Ada effectively connects the two banks of the Sava via this island, making the recreational area accessible to both residents of New Belgrade and Čukarica. From the height of the pylon, there is a view of the entire lake and the surrounding green hills.
Accessibility and transport connections
The Belgrade Fair is located near the bridge, and access to the bridge is provided by tram lines 3, 6, 12, 13 and buses 23, 37, 55, 56, 83, 84. It is the sixth bridge on the Sava River from its mouth; the bridge is part of the project to build an inner city ring road around Belgrade.
Tram service across the bridge is a unique feature, as not all cable-stayed bridges in the world are equipped with rail tracks. Belgrade trams of different generations — from old carriages to modern low-floor trains — regularly cross the Sava on this bridge, creating a characteristic urban scene.
Panorama from the bridge: what the eye can see
The bridge offers breathtaking views of the Sava River and both its banks — New and Old Belgrade. In clear weather, the confluence of the Sava and Danube is visible from the pylon, as well as the historic Kalemegdan Fortress on the high bank. The bridge provides a dynamic visual panorama with elegant lines and high pylons, creating an impressive view, especially at night thanks to spectacular lighting.
The night lighting of the bridge deserves special attention. The cables and pylon are illuminated by LED spotlights, which turn the structure into a giant luminaire visible from many parts of the city at night. The lighting colors change depending on holidays and memorable dates — from the Serbian tricolor to the colors of various international campaigns.
Seasonal features and weather conditions
Belgrade is located in a moderately continental climate zone with pronounced seasons. In winter, temperatures can drop below zero, and the Sava River is sometimes covered in fog, creating a mystical atmosphere around the bridge. In summer, the heat reaches +35°C, and Ada Ciganlija lake is filled with vacationers.
In spring and autumn, the area around the bridge and along the riverbanks is lush with greenery, trees, and park zones take on the most picturesque hues. Autumn foliage on the hillsides around the Sava creates a colorful backdrop for the white silhouette of the cable-stayed bridge. Along the riverbank, docks, boat moorings, and moored vessels are visible, adding river character to the landscape.
Architectural significance and heritage
The Bridge over Ada is an example of modern cable-stayed bridge construction, where functionality is combined with aesthetics. The pylon height of 200 meters makes it a noticeable dominant of the urban landscape, and the semi-fan cable system gives the structure lightness and elegance despite the massiveness of the construction.
The bridge project has been recognized by the engineering community as a successful example of adapting a cable-stayed structure to the complex geological conditions of sandy soil on the banks of the Sava. The deep foundation of the pylon at 40 meters and the reinforcement of Ada Ciganlija island with concrete have made it possible to create a reliable foundation for one of the highest bridges in the region.
What's visible on the camera
The camera overlooking the Bridge over Ada broadcasts an image of the suspension bridge over the river with car and tram traffic. The bridge has a high support tower with a cable-stayed railing. Cars, buses, and trams move across the bridge. In the background, urban development with multi-story residential and commercial buildings spread across hilly terrain is visible. Around the bridge and along the riverbanks, there is dense greenery, trees, and park zones. Along the riverbank, docks, boat moorings, and moored vessels are visible. In the right part of the frame, there is an industrial/port zone with warehouses and parking areas.
The online camera allows you to observe the traffic flow on the bridge in real time, monitor weather conditions over the Sava, and enjoy the views of the Belgrade riverbanks. This is a convenient way to assess the road situation or simply enjoy the view of one of the most impressive bridges in Southeast Europe without leaving home.
