USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile — Live Webcam
History of the USS Alabama BB-60
The live webcam broadcasts a view of the memorial park, where the main exhibit is the battleship USS Alabama (BB-60) — the fourth and final ship of the South Dakota class. The keel was laid on February 1, 1940 at the Norfolk Navy Yard, and on August 16, 1942, the ship was commissioned. Construction was carried out by over 3,000 workers around the clock for 30 months.
During her service in the Pacific Ocean, the battleship earned 9 battle stars, participating in operations in the Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands, Marianas, Leyte, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. The ship earned the nickname "Lucky Ship" — throughout World War II, she sustained no serious damage despite combat and typhoons. In June 1945, the crew survived a typhoon that damaged many other ships in the squadron.
From Warship to Memorial
In May 1962, the federal government announced plans to decommission BB-60. At that point, residents of the state organized a large-scale fundraising campaign and purchased the ship to create a museum. The battleship was transferred to the state in 1964, and on January 9, 1965, the memorial park officially opened. Today, it is one of the largest military memorials in the United States, occupying 100 acres on Battleship Parkway in Mobile Bay.
Memorial Park Exhibits
USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park is not just a ship museum but a full-scale memorial complex. The grounds feature:
• The USS Alabama battleship with 12 decks for exploration — visitors can climb inside gun turrets, visit the brig, explore crew quarters and control stations
• The submarine USS Drum (SS-228) — the oldest publicly displayed WWII-era submarine, which conducted 13 war patrols and sank 15 Japanese ships
• An aviation pavilion with over 30 aircraft and helicopters from different eras
• Tanks, artillery pieces, and memorials honoring veterans of various conflicts
Military Equipment on Outdoor Display
The live camera shows not only the battleship but also the outdoor military equipment exhibition. Tanks, armored vehicles, and artillery pieces are installed on the park's green lawns. In the frame, the tail of a large dark-colored military aircraft is visible — part of the aviation collection that includes fighters, bombers, and transport aircraft.
The black memorial monument in the center of the frame is dedicated to veterans, and numerous flagpoles with American flags create a solemn atmosphere. The park is managed by an independent state agency — the USS Alabama Battleship Commission, consisting of 18 members appointed by the state governor.
USS Drum Submarine
USS Drum (SS-228) is a Gato-class submarine, one of the most successful submarines of World War II. She conducted 13 war patrols and sank 15 Japanese ships. Today, it is the oldest publicly accessible WWII-era submarine. Visitors can go inside, see the torpedo tubes, the control room, and the crew's living conditions.
