From a Village to a World Shrine: The History of Medjugorje
Until 1981, it was an ordinary village, no different from other settlements in the Balkans. However, everything changed, and today Medjugorje holds a confident record in Bosnia and Herzegovina for the number of tourist visits. On June 24-25, 1981, the Virgin Mary began appearing to local teenagers, forever changing the fate of this quiet corner. Since then, the town has become one of the largest Catholic shrines in the world, attracting up to 1 million Christians of various denominations from around the globe every year.
The Architectural Heart of the Town: St. James' Church
The central square of Medjugorje is crowned by a snow-white temple that immediately catches the eye. St. James' Church was built from 1934 to 1969 and is today a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The building is designed in a distinctive Balkan style and adorned with two towers. The surroundings of Medjugorje are no less remarkable than its central square. Apparition Hill (Podbrdo) is the place where the first apparition of the Virgin Mary occurred. In 2001, a statue of the Queen of Peace was installed here, and a long staircase leads to the top, its steps literally worn down by thousands of pilgrim feet. On Krizevac Hill (White Cross Hill), an eight-meter concrete cross was erected in 1934 to mark the 1900th anniversary of Christ's crucifixion. In 1988, reliefs depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ were placed along the ascent to the hill, turning the path to the summit into a true biblical road.
