Lock Haven — A City on the Susquehanna River
Lock Haven is located on the West Branch of the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania. The city was founded on November 4, 1833, when Jerry Church held a public auction to sell lots for the new community. By 1839, Lock Haven had become the county seat of Clinton County. Today the city holds the status of Susquehanna Greenway River Town and is part of the Pennsylvania Wilds and Lumber Heritage Region.
The city's historic center has preserved its 19th-century architecture. Three sites are listed on the National Register of Historic Places: Memorial Park Site, Heisey House, and Water Street. Along the riverfront stretches the Lock Haven Levee Trail, also known as William Clinger Riverwalk — a popular walking area with views of the river.
Lock Haven University: From Normal School to Commonwealth University
The university was founded in 1870 as Central State Normal School. Over a century and a half, it changed its name several times: State Teachers College in Lock Haven (1927–1960), Lock Haven State College (1960–1983), Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania (1983–2022). In March 2022, the institution became part of Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania.
The campus is situated along the Susquehanna River with views of the city's central shops and restaurants. The main landmark is the bell tower, audible from anywhere on campus. The Lock Haven Arch has become a traditional spot for photos at graduation and when alumni return. Student life includes four national sororities and three national fraternities.
Aviation Heritage and the Piper Museum
In 1937, Piper Aircraft Corporation relocated to Lock Haven after a fire at its Bradford plant. The city became the center of production for the legendary Piper Cub aircraft. On the eastern outskirts lies William T. Piper Memorial Airport — a general aviation airport operated by the city.
Since 1986, the annual Sentimental Journey Fly-In has been held here — an event dedicated to the Piper Cub legacy. In 2026, the 40th anniversary of this event is being celebrated. The original idea was to see how many Piper Cub aircraft could be brought back to Lock Haven. Nearby, the Piper Aviation Museum is dedicated to the history of the aviation company.
Historic Downtown and Riverfront
Downtown Lock Haven offers shops, restaurants, and places for walks. The historic architecture and small-town atmosphere create a special charm. The riverfront features a floating stage — one of the most popular attractions, hosting the Lock Haven Summer Concert Series.
Heisey House is a Victorian-era museum open to visitors. Clinton County Courthouse is another architectural landmark in the city center. The riverfront is accessible from several points on East and West Water streets.
Natural Attractions Around the City
Lock Haven is surrounded by hills and waterways. Bald Eagle State Park is just 12.9 miles from the city. Bald Eagle Mountain — the western ridge in the Appalachian Ridge and Valley system — lies south of the West Branch Susquehanna River.
Susquehanna Greenway trails offer hiking routes of varying difficulty. The Pennsylvania Wilds region attracts hiking enthusiasts, fishing, and wildlife observation. Lock Haven is often called the gateway to natural attractions in tourist guides.
