Kumamoto — A City at the Crossroads of Fire and Greenery
The city of Kumamoto is located in the central part of Kyushu Island and is the administrative center of Kumamoto Prefecture. This region of Japan is often called "Land of Fire" — due to the active volcano Aso, one of the largest in the world. At the same time, the city itself has earned the unofficial name "City of Forests", reflecting its green appearance and abundance of vegetation. Kumamoto's population is 738,907 people with a density of about 1,800 people per square kilometer.

Kumamoto Castle — A Symbol of Resilience
In the very center of the city stands Kumamoto Castle, which is among the three most famous castles in Japan. Its construction was initiated by order of the feudal lord Kato Kiyomasa and completed in 1607. The castle complex occupies 760,000 m², making it one of the largest in the country.
The castle has two unofficial names — "Ginkgo Castle" and "Crow Castle" — and is listed as a National Treasure of Japan. In April 2016, the main tower was severely damaged by an earthquake but was fully restored by 2021. The Honmaru Goten Palace was reconstructed for the castle's 400th anniversary and opened to visitors in 2008.

Kyushu Island and the Nature of the Prefecture
Kumamoto is located on the western coast of Kyushu Island, the third largest island in Japan. The prefecture borders the Aso volcano — one of the largest active volcanoes in the world, which gave the region its nickname "Land of Fire." At the same time, the city is surrounded by green hills and mountains, visible in the background of the broadcast.
In the Kurukawa region is located one of Japan's most famous onsen resorts — the Kurukawa Onsen hot springs. This is a popular vacation spot among Japanese and tourists, attracting visitors with hot springs and traditional atmosphere.
What to See in the City Center
In addition to the castle, there are several free attractions in central Kumamoto. Kato Shrine is dedicated to the castle's founder Kato Kiyomasa and is within walking distance from the center. Honmyoji Temple and Reigando Cave are also accessible without tickets.
Shimotori Shopping Arcade — a pedestrian shopping street in the city center where you can sample local cuisine and buy souvenirs. The Kumamoto Contemporary Art Museum (CAMK) is located in the central district and offers a permanent exhibition. For fans of Japanese pop culture, Kumamon Square operates — a venue for performances by the mascot Kumamon, who has become a symbol of the region.
Suizenji Park is a famous attraction with a traditional landscape garden recreating a miniature of the famous Tokaido route with 53 stations. This place is especially beautiful during cherry blossom season and in autumn when the maple trees turn red.
