Prague is famous for its centuries-old architecture, but in the 20th and 21st centuries several modern churches have appeared in the city, among which the Church of Christ the Savior stands out. A New Church in an Old District

Barrandov is one of the most interesting districts of Prague, located in the southwest of the capital. The district is known for its picturesque terrain and historical heritage. The name Barrandov itself reflects the geological past of the area, as the district was named after the French scientist Joachim Barrande, who explored the surroundings in the 19th century. The district's name was established in 1928.

In Soviet times, Barrandov became a true cultural center of the country. The famous Barrandov Studios film studio is located here, opened in 1931 according to a design by architect Max Urban. It is called the "European Hollywood" — famous films that became Oscar winners were shot here. In Soviet times, not only Czech but also Russian directors worked at the studio.

The district also has another historical value — the Barrandov Terraces. This is a complex of buildings, villas, gardens, and parks that has held the status of a cultural monument since 1988 and an architectural monument since 1993. The terraces form a picturesque ensemble scattered along a hillside, offering a panoramic view of Prague from the upper part of the district.

Architectural Image of the Church

History and Purpose

The church appeared in Barrandov at the beginning of the 21st century. The consecration of the church took place on November 22, 2020, in a solemn setting. Performed by Prague Archbishop Cardinal Dominik Duka, it can be considered an event that unites the traditions of the Catholic Church and modern architecture.

The architectural project was developed in 2013 by the ATELIER Žiška studio. The authors of the project — architects Jakub Žiška and Pavel Šmelhaus — proposed a unique solution combining the religious purpose of the building with the practical function of a public space.

The church is part of a complex with a community center and café. This makes it not only a place of worship but also a space for meetings and socializing among district residents. In Prague, the Church of Christ the Savior has become one of the few new Catholic churches built in the capital in recent decades, which underscores its special significance for modern religious life.

How to Get to Barrandov

The Barrandov district is located in the Prague 5 district. The church is situated right on the residential estate between panel buildings, at the address: Grussova 1144/6. The easiest way to reach the church is by public transport. Trams No. 5, 12, 15 run from Smíchov Station to the "Barrandov Polyclinic" stop, as does tram No. 21 from Charles Square. From the stop, you need to walk 300 meters to the church. Buses No. 104, 120, 130, 170, and 230 also stop in the area.

Transport accessibility makes the church a convenient starting point for walks around Barrandov. There is a parking lot next to the church that is visible in real time on the camera.
