Who was Jerzy Ziętek

Jerzy Jan Antoni Ziętek was born on 10 June 1901 in Gliwice and died on 20 November 1985 in Zabrze. He was a participant in the three Silesian Uprisings of 1919–1921, and during World War II he joined the Polish Armed Forces in the USSR. After the war, Ziętek served as the voivode of the Katowice Voivodeship, actively lobbying for the construction of key urban infrastructure facilities.

It was thanks to Ziętek's persistence that such iconic structures as Spodek appeared in Katowice. The general personally championed the idea of building a sports complex that was meant to become the city's new symbol. The roundabout was named after him in recognition of his contributions to the region — a tribute to the man who shaped the post-war face of Katowice.

Spodek: a flying saucer in the city center
