Bandai Plaza reconstruction

Bandai Plaza (万代広場) in front of the station has been undergoing a major reconstruction since 2024, including the construction of a bus terminal directly beneath the railway viaduct. This is an ambitious project designed to create a unified transport hub combining railway services, bus routes, and urban transport. Since March 25, 2023, the north-south pedestrian passage through the station (between Bandai Plaza and South Exit Plaza) has been open to pedestrians around the clock. Construction equipment, excavators, scaffolding, and temporary fencing are visible on the square — all part of the large-scale upgrade of the transport hub, which is expected to be completed in the coming years and will completely transform the appearance of the square.

Transport infrastructure of the square

The Bandai Exit square features taxi stands, a bus terminal beneath the viaduct, and the BRT Bandai-bashi line (B1 line) connecting the station with other districts of the city. BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) is a high-speed bus transport system with dedicated lanes that efficiently serves Niigata's passenger flows. The bus terminal beneath the station viaduct provides transfers between Bandai Plaza and South Exit Plaza, as well as bus departures to Niigata Airport and intercity routes (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya, and others). Intercity buses connect Niigata with all major cities in Japan, making the station the most important transport hub in the region.

Shinano River and Bandai Bridge

Niigata Station is located in the Bandai district — one of the two main commercial districts in the city center, and the Shinano River (Shinanogawa) flows through the center of Niigata, dividing the city into eastern (business) and western (commercial and entertainment) parts. The Shinano is the longest river in Japan, stretching 367 kilometers. The six-arched Bandai Bridge is a symbol of the city and a national cultural asset of Japan, spanning the Shinano River and connecting the banks in close proximity to the station complex. The bridge was reconstructed after the 1964 earthquake and has preserved its historical appearance. Near the bridge stands the "Rainbow Tower" (Bandai City Rainbow Tower) — a 100-meter building painted in all the colors of the rainbow, which is part of the station district development. The Bandai district, where the station is located, is one of the two main commercial and business centers of Niigata (along with the Furumachi district).
