Tunnell & Raysor Webcam — Live Streaming from Lewes Yacht Club
Lewes Yacht Club: A History of Sailing Tradition on Delaware Bay
The Tunnell & Raysor webcam offers a view of the waters of one of the oldest yacht clubs on the US Atlantic coast. Lewes Yacht Club was founded in 1932 as a sailing association proposed by Marjorie Virden and George Davisson. The idea for the club was born from the shared passion of local residents for sailing and recreational boating on Delaware Bay.
Among the 17 founding members was Richard Reese, Sr., who became the club's first commodore. By 1934, membership had grown to 82 people, reflecting the rapid development of sailing culture in the region. Today, the club continues the traditions of amateur and competitive yachting, remaining the center of maritime life in Lewes.
Lewes: "The First Town in The First State"
The town of Lewes in Delaware bears the unofficial title of "The First Town in The First State". It is one of the oldest European settlements in America, founded by the Dutch in 1631. The town's name comes from the English town of Lewes in Sussex County, and its historical heritage is reflected in numerous landmarks.
On the bay shore stands the Zwaanendael Museum, built in 1931 as a replica of a traditional Dutch town hall. The museum tells the story of the Dutch period in the town's history and is one of Lewes's landmarks. Also worth noting are the Cannonball House, Ryves Holt House, and the 1812 Memorial Park — these sites shape the historical character of the town.
Tunnell & Raysor: A Law Firm with Over a Century of History
The camera is named after the Tunnell & Raysor law firm, which has served Delaware residents for over 130 years. The firm was founded by Ebe W. Tunnell, born in Blackwater, Delaware. Interestingly, the name "Tunnell" has nothing to do with the underwater tunnel between Lewes and Cape May — that was an April Fools' joke by Delaware authorities about building a tunnel, which appeared long after the firm was founded.
Tunnell & Raysor, P.A. specializes in various areas of law and is one of the recognized legal institutions in Sussex County. The firm's logo can be seen in the upper right corner of the webcam broadcast.
Delaware Bay: Waters for Sailing and Regattas
Delaware Bay is one of the key waterways on the US Atlantic coast for sailing. Sailboat regattas here are popular among both professional sailors and recreational boaters. Lewes Yacht Club hosts various events, including competitions for young sailors and traditional regattas.
The bay's waters are characterized by moderate currents and good wind conditions, making them attractive for day cruises and training voyages. On the camera, you can see small motorboats and yachts moving across the waters, creating a vivid picture of maritime life.
