The institution was founded in 1960 as Christopher Newport College — a two-year branch of the College of William and Mary for working professionals. The first building at the new location — the original Christopher Newport Hall — appeared around the same time the men's basketball team played its inaugural season. In 1977, the college gained independence, and in 1992 it was renamed Christopher Newport University.

The Dark Side of Growth: How Expansion Changed the City

The campus growth hasn't always been painless for the city. In 2015, the university publicly acknowledged that expansion decisions led to the displacement of residents from a vibrant, established African American neighborhood. The University's Namesake: Captain Christopher Newport and His Legacy

The university is named after Captain Christopher Newport (1561–after August 15, 1617) — a British sea captain and one of the founders of the Jamestown colony. On April 26, 1607, he commanded the ships that entered the Chesapeake Bay and became a member of the colony's governing council. Newport lost his arm in a battle with the Spanish but continued his service. In 1612, he joined the East India Company and died in Banten (Java). In 2007, a statue of the captain was installed on the CNU campus, sparking controversy over the depiction of Newport with a prosthetic arm.
