In the heart of the French Alps, in the Hautes-Alpes department of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, lies the unique ski resort of Montclar-les-2-Vallées. Its main feature is the only self-governing resort status in Europe, independent of large corporations. This means the atmosphere here remains authentic, and decisions are made in the interests of local residents and guests, not shareholders.
The resort appeals to those who are tired of overcrowded mega-resorts and value peaceful skiing without queues, even during peak school holiday periods. Two slopes — Ubay and Blanche — offer different landscapes and sensations: one is sunnier and more open, the other is very well preserved, with wild sections, where runs pass through dense snow-covered forests.
Beginner area: first steps on the slope
For those who have skied or snowboarded for the first time, Montclar-les-2-Vallées has prepared ideal conditions. The beginner area is an open grassy field that transforms in winter into a safe, spacious run with a gentle gradient. This is exactly the area broadcast by the webcam in real time, allowing you to assess conditions before arriving.
The area's infrastructure is thought out down to the smallest detail: metal supports and cable wires ensure a convenient ascent, while to the left are the multi-storey buildings of the ski school and service buildings. ESF Ski School: teaching since 1937
The French ski school ESF (École du Ski Français) is the global standard for ski instruction. The organisation was founded in 1937 together with the French Ski Federation, and since then its methodology has become the benchmark worldwide.
In Montclar, ESF employs around 30 instructors ready to help master basic skills or refine technique. The school offers group lessons for children on weekends, as well as private lessons for all ages. The youngest guests — children aged 3-4 in Club Piou-Piou — learn through play under the supervision of experienced educators. For teenagers and adults aged 13 and over, programmes of any difficulty level are available, including freeride, ski touring, and telemark instruction.
Lifts and runs: 50 km of possibilities
The Montclar-les-2-Vallées ski domain stretches at altitudes from 1,350 m to 2,500 m above sea level, guaranteeing stable snow cover throughout the season. The total length of runs is around 50 km — 29 runs of varying difficulty, from green to black.
The lift infrastructure includes 12 lifts: 4 chairlifts and 8 drag lifts. One of the key lifts is the 2-seat Télésiège de la Brèche chairlift, providing access to the Dormillouse slope and the Col-Ba lakes. Thanks to this number of lifts, even at the height of the winter holidays there are no queues — you can ski continuously without wasting time waiting.
Two slopes, two characters: Ubay and Blanche
The uniqueness of Montclar lies in its two slopes, known as versants. The Ubay and Blanche versants offer completely different landscapes and skiing sensations. Ubay is more open and sunny, ideal for beginners and family holidays. Blanche, on the other hand, is described as "very well preserved" — here the runs pass through wild forest areas, creating a sense of unity with nature.
From the summits, panoramic views open up over the snow-capped peaks and, in clear weather, over Lake Serre-Ponçon — one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe, located at the foot of the Alps. The runs pass through vast snow-covered forests, making skiing not only a sporting but also an aesthetic pleasure.
Infrastructure and entertainment
Montclar-les-2-Vallées is not just about skiing. The resort features an ice rink, a sauna, mountain restaurants including Les Clapeiries and Cabane du lac, where you can sample local cuisine while enjoying mountain scenery. For thrill-seekers, there is a Fun Zone with an Air Bag for freestyle, Boarder Cross, and a sledging run.
Fans of off-piste skiing will appreciate the freeride zone, including the Ubay, Blanche serre ponçon, Dalles, Mur sud bis, and Fort sectors. For those who want to try heli-skiing, there are also opportunities. The resort has 3 ski equipment rental shops, so gear can be selected right on site.
How to get to Montclar
The resort is conveniently located relative to major cities in Provence. From Aix-en-Provence — about 1.5 hours by car, from Marseille — approximately 2 hours. The roads are well cleared in winter, and you can reach the resort by car or public transport. The nearest major airport is in Marseille, where you can rent a car or use a transfer service.
