Geographical location and altitude of the resort
Shymbulak Ski Resort (Chimbulak) is located in the gorge of Zailiyskiy Alatau — a mountain range that is part of the Tien Shan system. The resort is just 30 kilometers from Almaty, making it easily accessible for residents and guests of the metropolis. The base station sits at 2260 meters above sea level, while the upper point of the ski area reaches 3200 meters. History of the ski center
Shymbulak has a rich history of development as a sports venue. Since 1983, the resort has held the status of an Olympic ski training center. During this period, a four-story hotel for 220 guests, a medical center, a Finnish bath, and new high-speed lifts were built. Today, Shymbulak is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as one of the highest mountain resorts in the region and continues to welcome athletes and tourists from around the world.
Infrastructure and trails
The resort offers trails of varying difficulty — from gentle slopes for beginners to steep descents for experienced skiers and snowboarders. The total length of ski runs spans several kilometers, with a vertical drop of about 940 meters. Modern cable cars operate on the territory, including gondola and chair lifts. Equipment rental, instructor services, restaurants, and cafés are available to visitors. At an altitude of 3200 meters, a high-mountain eco-hotel and restaurants with panoramic views are in operation.
Climate and weather conditions
The mountain climate of Zailiyskiy Alatau is characterized by sunny weather and stable snow cover. The ski season usually begins in late November — early December and lasts until the end of March, and in some years — until April. Thanks to its altitude, snow on Shymbulak's slopes persists longer than at many other resorts in the region. In summer, the resort transforms into a base for hiking, trekking, and outdoor recreation — the air temperature at an altitude of 3200 meters even in warm months rarely exceeds +15°C.
Wildlife of Zailiyskiy Alatau
The resort's territory is home to typical representatives of the Tien Shan mountain fauna. On the slopes and in the vicinity of Shymbulak, you can encounter mountain goats (teke) and argali — sheep listed in the Red Book. These animals often appear near tourist trails and observation decks, especially in the morning and evening hours. In the summer period, marmots, snowcocks, and various species of birds of prey can also be found here.
How to get to the resort
You can get to Shymbulak from Almaty in several ways. The most popular is bus No. 12, which runs from the city directly to the resort's base station. The journey takes about 30-40 minutes depending on traffic conditions. You can also use taxi services or a personal vehicle — the road to the resort is well-paved and maintained in good condition. Parking for cars is available on the territory of Shymbulak.
What you can see on the camera
The webcam is installed at the "3200 meters" observation deck — the highest point of the ski resort. In the camera's field of view is a panorama of the rocky mountain ridges of Zailiyskiy Alatau with patches of glacier and eternal snow on the peaks. In the foreground is an open area with a wooden deck and white railing, where tourists stroll. Infrastructure elements are clearly visible: a tall street lamp, an information board, a white canopy umbrella, and a blue structure, presumably a ticket office or lift station.
