From a Majestic Castle to Abandoned Ruins
The history of this place began in the distant 12th century. Aremberg Castle was first mentioned in 1166 under the name Arberg. Its strategic hilltop location made it an impregnable fortress controlling the surrounding lands. In the Middle Ages, the castle occupied the entire hilltop, and its garrison numbered around three thousand soldiers. However, endless wars and sieges took their toll. The castle was destroyed by the French in 1683. The once-prosperous settlement turned into a poor village, and the poet Gottfried Kinkel, who visited these places, later described the striking poverty of the local inhabitants and the desolation he witnessed.

The brick walls and remnants of towers at an altitude of 623 meters above sea level create ideal conditions for the Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo).
