Brzeg Market Square — Live Webcam Online Streaming
Brzeg and Its Market Square — the Heart of Silesia
Brzeg, known in German as Brieg, is situated on the banks of the Oder River in the Opole Voivodeship of Poland. The city's name literally translates as "shore" — and this is no coincidence, as it was the river that shaped its destiny for centuries. Today, 38,496 people live here on an area of about 14.7 km². The Market Square, or Rynek, remains the city's main artery — a place where commercial history, architectural heritage, and everyday life of locals intersect. The live webcam allows you to see this space in real time, without the need to travel.
History of the Market Square — from Medieval Merchants to the Present Day
Brzeg's Market Square historically served as the city's commercial center. In ancient times, trade rows and the Cloth Hall were located here, where fabrics were bought and sold — one of the main commodities of medieval Silesia. The coordinates of this place are N050 51.701, E017 28.181 — and it is from here that the view of the architectural ensemble, formed over centuries, opens up. The layout of the square has preserved its medieval structure, although the buildings themselves have been rebuilt many times. Today, Rynek remains a pedestrian zone where fairs, festivals, and city celebrations are held.
Brzeg Town Hall — the Renaissance Jewel of the Square
The dominant feature of the Market Square is the Town Hall, whose construction was completed in 1570–1577. This is a striking example of Renaissance architecture with pronounced Italian influences — not without reason is it called an outstanding monument of the Renaissance era in the region. The building was rebuilt several times in the 18th–19th centuries, yet managed to preserve its historical appearance and Italian character. The Town Hall has survived to the present day with almost no significant changes and remains one of the symbols of Brzeg. On the facades of the surrounding houses, one can notice images of Archangel Michael defeating the dragon — a symbol that connects local architecture with legends and mystical tales.
Castle of the Silesian Piasts — Neighbor of the Market Square
In the immediate vicinity of the Rynek rises the Castle of the Silesian Piasts, first mentioned in 1235. This fortress served as the residence of the princely court of the Silesian Piasts and is today known as the "Silesian Wawel" — by analogy with the royal castle in Kraków. Now the Museum of the Silesian Piasts operates within its walls, and the Renaissance gates and chapel represent a valuable monument of cultural heritage not only of Silesia but of all of Poland. At Rynek 2 there is an ancient house directly connected with the history of the castle complex, and cultural events organized by the museum are regularly held on the square itself.
Legends and Mysteries of Old Brzeg
Brzeg is a city with a mystical character. The facades of the Market Square buildings depict Archangel Michael and the dragon he defeated — this is not just decoration, but a reference to local legends about the struggle between good and evil. In the city itself, there is an unusual pietà — a sculpture that attracts the attention of tourists and researchers of religious art. The ancient houses on the square hold many secrets: from medieval trade deals to stories of ghosts that supposedly appear in the night alleys. These tales make Brzeg particularly attractive for lovers of atmospheric places with a rich past.
The 1997 Flood — When the Water Stopped
In the summer of 1997, Central Europe experienced a catastrophic flood that went down in history as the "Millennium Flood." The Oder and Morava rivers burst their banks, flooding territories of Poland, the Czech Republic, and Germany. The total damage amounted to about 4.5 billion dollars, and the death toll reached 114 people. However, Brzeg was spared by the elements — as the local saying goes, "Powódź ominęła Brzeg" (The flood bypassed Brzeg). The water level in the Oder here rose to 7.30 meters, but the city did not suffer serious destruction, unlike many other settlements in the region. This event is still remembered as a miracle and confirmation of Brzeg's special status.
