The total damage amounted to about 4.5 billion dollars, and the death toll reached 114 people. However, Brzeg was spared by the elements — as the local saying goes, "Powódź ominęła Brzeg" (The flood bypassed Brzeg). The water level in the Oder here rose to 7.30 meters, but the city did not suffer serious destruction, unlike many other settlements in the region. This event is still remembered as a miracle and confirmation of Brzeg's special status.
