History of Brixham Sailing Club

Brixham is a fishing town on the south coast of Devon, where maritime traditions stretch back centuries. Maritime History of Brixham

Brixham is renowned as the birthplace of the great sailing trawlers — their development began here in the early 19th century due to declining fish stocks off the Torbay coast. The oldest surviving Victorian fishing trawler, Pilgrim, was built and fitted out in Brixham in 1895. Today she offers traditional sailing along the coasts of Devon, Cornwall, France, and the Isles of Scilly. The Heritage Regatta traces its roots to sailing trawler races held in Torbay in the early 1800s. Entries were restricted to registered Brixham sailing trawlers of over 40 tons displacement. The trawler Valerian was particularly successful — her model is now displayed at the yacht club. The remaining Brixham trawler fleet resumed racing in 1997.

Youth Sailing

In 1989, a group of dedicated volunteers from Brixham Yacht Club formed the Brixham Junior Sailing Club. This initiative allows young people to learn the ropes of sailing from an early age, competing in dinghy races. The club provides launching facilities at all states of tide, making training accessible at any time. Dinghy hire is available — up to 7 boats can be taken out simultaneously.

Scenery and Wildlife

The sailing club grounds offer panoramic views of the harbour and sea. The Jubilee Room Restaurant provides a sweeping vista of Brixham's bustling yet picturesque working harbour and the beautiful waters and coastlines of Torbay and Lyme Bay. The 2025 regatta featured classic sailing vessels of all shapes and sizes. The club offers "the best seat in the house" at several national sailing events, including the Finn Class UK National Championship (3–5 July), Brixham to Salcombe (4 July), and RTYC Salcombe to Dartmouth (19 July).
