The Brown family has owned this place since approximately the mid-1940s, when the Neptune Canning sardine factory operated here under the management of Ted Leonard. In those days, the dock was the center of the fish processing industry, not a recreation spot for yachtsmen.

The Brown brothers operated the last sardine factory in Boothbay Harbor. They built a small production facility in 1949, where sardines were packed into round cans. The factory operated for a short time and closed in 1950, but its legacy is still felt in the atmosphere of this place. An old photograph depicting those very buildings hangs on the wall in the hotel dining room, reminding guests of the industrial past of the harbor.
