Torre Paola in San Felice Circeo — Medieval Tower, Live Webcam
History of Torre Paola: Pirates and Coastal Defense
On the Lazio coast, in the municipality of San Felice Circeo, rises one of the most impressive symbols of the Pontine coast — the Torre Paola watchtower. It was built in 1563 as part of the first group of four defensive towers on Monte Circeo. The construction was commissioned by Gregorio Paola, whose name became attached to the structure. The tower's main purpose was to defend the coast from raids by Saracen pirates, who plagued the entire Tyrrhenian coast of Italy in the 16th century.
The defensive complex included four towers: Torre Paola, Torre Moresca, Torre Cervia, and Torre Fico. British troops destroyed three of them in 1809, leaving Torre Paola as the only one to retain its original structure. This makes it a unique monument of coastal defense within the modern Circeo National Park.
Circe Myths: The Goddess-Witch and the Cave on the Cliff Slope
Mount Circeo, on whose slope the tower stands, is inextricably linked to one of the most famous myths of antiquity. According to Homer's Odyssey, this was the dwelling place of the goddess Circe, who turned sailors who fell into her hands into pigs. Odysseus spent an entire year with her before continuing his journey home. Researchers discovered grotta di Circe near the tower — the Cave of Circe, which became further evidence that the mythical events took place on this particular stretch of coast.
On the cliff slope, right next to the tower, lies the Torre Paola Spaccata Cave — a cave with an opening accessible from the sea. Its name ("Split Tower") has spawned numerous legends among locals. For those watching the live webcam stream, the cliff with the tower is not just a scenic rock, but a place where real history intertwines with ancient myths.
Architecture of the Medieval Watchtower
Torre Paola is a classic example of medieval coastal defense architecture. It is situated on the Circeo promontory, bordering the long Sabaudia beach, and forms part of an ancient citadel system — a defensive complex that once controlled the entire Pontine coast. The tower served as an observation post: during the day, signals were sent from its summit using smoke, and at night using fire, warning the population of approaching pirate vessels.
A parking area for visitors is located near the tower, from which you can begin a hike along the trails of the National Park. The live webcam offers a view of the tower from below, at beach level — exactly as sailors approaching the shore would have seen it in those distant times.
Circeo National Park: UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
The area surrounding Torre Paola is part of Circeo National Park (Parco Nazionale del Circeo) — Italy's first national park, established to protect the Pontine Marshes and the unique coastal landscape. The park holds UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status and encompasses several ecosystems: the limestone ridge of Monte Circeo, the sand dunes of Sabaudia, coastal lakes, and the only surviving fragment of primary Mediterranean forest in Italy — the Selva di Terracina.
The protected area also includes Lake Paola and Zannone Island — part of the Pontine Archipelago. Torre Paola Tower is one of the most impressive historical landmarks of the park, organically integrated into the natural coastal landscape.
Sabaudia Beach and the Tower's Surroundings
The webcam offers a view of the sandy Sabaudia beach — one of the longest beaches on the Lazio coast. The shore is lined with rows of sunbeds and enclosed umbrellas, and a wooden walkway runs along it. To the left rises a steep, rocky hill with dense vegetation, on whose slope Torre Paola is perched. The sea in this part of Sabaudia Bay is usually calm, with gentle waves — ideal conditions for swimming.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Circeo National Park features numerous hiking trails. One of the most popular is the Sentiero del Picco di Circe, connecting Torre Paola Tower with San Felice Circeo. There is also the Monte Circeo Loop route for experienced hikers. Panoramic views of the bay, Lake Paola, and the maritime horizon open from the cliff summit.
